Beschreibung

Regulatory Evolution explores the dynamic nature of administrative laws, revealing how they adapt and change in response to economic shifts, technological advancements, and evolving social needs. The book argues that effective regulations must continuously evolve to remain relevant, highlighting examples where rigid, top-down approaches have failed. One key insight is how regulations undergo fundamental shifts driven by economic incentives and societal values.

The book examines historical regulatory shifts and analyzes the impact of globalization, the digital economy, and technologies like artificial intelligence. It uses legal case studies, economic data, and policy analyses to support its arguments. The evolutionary framework suggests regulations evolve through mechanisms akin to natural selection, where only the fittest rules survive. This approach provides a unique perspective on understanding and designing resilient regulatory systems.

The book progresses by first establishing a historical context, then delving into the drivers of regulatory change, and finally considering the influence of evolving social needs. It is written for a broad audience, including policymakers, legal professionals, and academics, offering insights applicable to real-world challenges such as regulating emerging technologies and adapting rules for environmental sustainability and data privacy.

America has a God-shaped hole in its heart, argues New York Times bestselling author Ben Shapiro, and we shouldn't fill it with politics and hate.
In 2016, Ben Shapiro spoke at UC Berkeley. Hundreds of police officers were required from 10 UC campuses across the state to protect his speech, which was -- ironically -- about the necessity for free speech and rational debate.
He came to argue that Western Civilization is in the midst of a crisis of purpose and ideas. Our freedoms are built upon the twin notions that every human being is made in God’s image and that human beings were created with reason capable of exploring God’s world.
We can thank these values for the birth of science, the dream of progress, human rights, prosperity, peace, and artistic beauty. Jerusalem and Athens built America, ended slavery, defeated the Nazis and the Communists, lifted billions from poverty and gave billions spiritual purpose. Jerusalem and Athens were the foundations of the Magna Carta and the Treaty of Westphalia; they were the foundations of Declaration of Independence, Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, and Martin Luther King Jr.’s Letter from Birmingham Jail.
Civilizations that rejected Jerusalem and Athens have collapsed into dust. The USSR rejected Judeo-Christian values and Greek natural law, substituting a new utopian vision of “social justice” – and they starved and slaughtered tens of millions of human beings. The Nazis rejected Judeo-Christian values and Greek natural law, and they shoved children into gas chambers. Venezuela rejects Judeo-Christian values and Greek natural law, and citizens of their oil-rich nation have been reduced to eating dogs.
We are in the process of abandoning Judeo-Christian values and Greek natural law, favoring instead moral subjectivism and the rule of passion. And we are watching our civilization collapse into age-old tribalism, individualistic hedonism, and moral subjectivism. We believe we can reject Judeo-Christian values and Greek natural law and satisfy ourselves with intersectionality, or scientific materialism, or progressive politics, or authoritarian governance, or nationalistic solidarity.
    We can’t.
The West is special, and in The Right Side of History, Ben Shapiro bravely explains that it’s because too many of us have lost sight of the moral purpose that drives us each to be better, or the sacred duty to work together for the greater good, or both. A stark warning, and a call to spiritual arms, this book may be the first step in getting our civilization back on track.

What would happen to a liberal's mind if he subsisted entirely on conservative media and rhetoric? That's what critically acclaimed political humorist, NPR commentator, and McSweeney's contributor John Moe sets out to learn in Conservatize Me.
We always hear how everyone in America is firmly planted in red or blue. They're permanently conservative or irreversibly liberal. But are we all really that locked into the left or the right?
John Moe, raised in a family of proud left-wingers and living in deeply liberal Seattle most of his life, sets out to determine if what we believe is based on environment or actual conviction. Moe puts himself on a strict conservative regimen: He resets his radio dials from NPR to Rush Limbaugh, goes head-to-head with some of today's most influential conservative thinkers for a series of ""conversion sessions,"" and through it all tries to maintain positive standing with his lefty wife and young but already liberal kids.
Conservatize Me will strike a powerful chord with millions of disgruntled Americans ready for a fresh, humorous, and highly entertaining look at our country's political landscape. Will Moe end up getting a Dick Cheney tattoo and swearing loyalty to the Christian Coalition? Will he get a Dennis Kucinich tattoo and dedicate his life to cooking vegan food at protest rallies? Listen and find out.

    Violence - A Very Short...

Violence is part and parcel of human history and of human nature. It is one of our most distinctive traits, the one thing that all cultures and societies, across time, share in common. It has defined not only the ways in which individuals relate to each other, but also how collective entities and states have interacted with each other over the millennia. All societies are violent and all individuals have the capacity for violence. However, not all societies and not all individuals are equally violent, and nor does violence exist with the same intensity across cultures.

This Very Short Introduction examines the more visible, physical acts of violence—interpersonal, gendered, collective, religious, sexual, criminal, and political—in the modern world. It explores how violence in the pre-modern world was different from the modern world, and what is significant about those differences. It also discusses what violence is by examining understandings of the ideas, values, and cultural practices embedded in an act of violence, and considering acts of violence as the outcome of a process dependent on the cultural context in which they take place. Along the way Dwyer considers some core questions, asking whether violence is always 'bad', and if there are any limits to human violence? And, are we becoming more or less violent?
