Synopsis

Police Scanner Insights explores the world of police scanners, focusing on both the technology that powers them and the political implications of their use. The book examines how these devices provide real-time access to law enforcement activities and local emergencies, fostering community awareness. It highlights the dual-edged nature of scanner technology: while promoting government transparency, it also raises significant concerns about privacy and the potential for misuse. The book uniquely balances technical explanations with ethical and legal considerations, examining the evolution of radio communication and delving into the intricacies of radio frequencies and modulation techniques without requiring prior technical knowledge.

Beginning with the core technology, it progresses to the legal landscape, and concludes with real-world applications, drawing on government regulations, FCC guidelines, and interviews with law enforcement and legal experts. It also touches upon media studies, political science, and technology ethics, connecting scanner information to public perception of crime and issues of government transparency. The book navigates complex issues like encryption and its impact on public access, aiming to equip readers with the knowledge to critically evaluate the role of scanner information.

It emphasizes the importance of responsible and ethical use, appealing to citizen journalists, community watch groups, and anyone interested in the intersection of technology and politics in shaping public safety.

WINNER OF THE 2022 WRITERS’ TRUST BALSILLIE PRIZE FOR PUBLIC POLICY

Is the ‘smart city’ the utopia we’ve been waiting for?

The promise of the so-called smart city has been at the forefront of urban planning and development since the early 2010s, and the tech industry that supplies smart city software and hardware is now worth hundreds of billions a year.

But the ideas and approaches underpinning smart city tech raise tough and important questions about the future of urban communities, surveillance, automation, and public participation. The smart city era, moreover, belongs firmly in a longer historical narrative about cities — one defined by utopian ideologies, architectural visions, and technological fantasies.

Smart streetlights, water and air quality tracking, autonomous vehicles: with examples from all over the world, including New York, Los Angeles, Boston, Portland, and Chicago, Dream States unpacks the world of smart city tech, but also situates this important shift in city-building into a broader story about why we still dream about perfect places.

“John Lorinc’s incisive analysis in Dream States reminds us that the search for urban utopia is not new. Throughout the book, Lorinc underscores the fact that a gamut of urban innovations – from smart city megaprojects to e-government to pandemic preparedness tools – only provide promise when scrutinized together with the political, economic, social, and physical complexities of urban life.” – Shauna Brail, University of Toronto

“Dream States: Smart Cities, Technology, and the Pursuit of Urban Utopias takes us on a fascinating journey across world cities to show how technology has shaped them in the past and how smart city technology will reshape them in the future. This book is essential reading for policy makers, researchers, and practitioners interested in understanding the opportunities and challenges of smart city technology and what it means for city building.” – Enid Slack, University of Toronto School of Cities

“Utopia may be the oldest grift in the city-building business, but Dream States shows that technology is a timeless tool for turning the most ordinary of urban dreams – clean air and water, safe streets, and decent homes – into reality. As digital dilettantes try to sell us on a software overhaul, John Lorinc provides us an indispensable and flawless guide to the must-haves and never-agains of the smart city.” – Anthony Townsend, Urbanist in Residence, Cornell Tech, author of Smart Cities

    20 Battles - Searching for a...

Favouring manoeuvre over attrition and often punching above their weight, South African soldiers have become known for their tenacity, dash and ability to defy the odds. Their unique directive command style has also helped them to excel in defining battles and operations, from the campaign in German South West Africa in 1915 to the cross-border operations in Angola during the Border War.
In 20 Battles, military historians Evert Kleynhans and David Brock Katz investigate the evolution of South Africa's armed forces over a century from 1913 to 2013. They track the evolution of the doctrine and structure of the defence force, uncovering historical continuity and the lessons learned from past battles and operations.
What is clear is that when South African soldiers have the freedom to operate according to their manoeuvre doctrine, as they had in East Africa in 1916 and southern Ethiopia in 1941, they can achieve stunning results. But when hemmed in by rigid doctrine and a top-down command style, as at Delville Wood in 1916 and Tobruk in 1942, the results can be tragic.
20 Battles combines both battlefield drama and crisp analysis and in the process provides a much-needed perspective on the South African way of war.

Bitten Eagle is a thought-provoking book that challenges Christians to examine themselves to see if they are steadfast in the faith. The declining spiritual condition of America has been led by secularization and the evolving social norms of today's culture. Many Christians today are distracted from their primary mission as if they didn't know they had one.

The evangelistic approach, laced throughout each story, is to ensure that readers are informed of spiritual truths and challenged to maintain the Christian perspective.

2 Corinthians13:5 (NIV) Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you-unless, of course, you fail the test?

Kevin M. Wynne is a Christian pastor, business leader, and Marine Corps veteran. His resume includes vast experience in corporate and executive leadership, business development, and Christian ministry. His formal education includes Marketing Management, Theology, and Apologetics. He was ordained in 2003 and has served as the pastor of The First Baptist Church of Durant, Florida since 2004.

Kevin and his wife Wendy have been married since 1989 and have 3 adult children: Kelsey, Kyle, and Kip.

    Forbidden - A 3000-Year History...

    Jordan D. Rosenblum

Jews do not eat pig. This (not always true) observation has been made by both Jews and non-Jews for more than three thousand years and is rooted in biblical law. Though the Torah prohibits eating pig meat, it is not singled out more than other food prohibitions. Horses, rabbits, squirrels, and even vultures, while also not kosher, do not inspire the same level of revulsion for Jews as the pig. The pig has become a symbol for people to signal their Jewishness, non-Jewishness, or rebellion from Judaism.

Starting with the Hebrew Bible, Jordan D. Rosenblum historicizes the emergence of the pig as a key symbol of Jewish identity, from the Roman persecution of ancient rabbis, to the Spanish Inquisition, to Shakespeare's writings, to modern memoirs of those leaving Orthodox Judaism. The pig appears in debates about Jewish emancipation in eighteenth-century England and in vaccine conspiracies; in World War II rallying cries, when many American Jewish soldiers were "eating ham for Uncle Sam;" and in recent deliberations about the kosher status of Impossible Pork.

All told, there is a rich and varied story about the associations of Jews and pigs over time, both emerging from within Judaism and imposed on Jews by others. Expansive yet accessible, Forbidden offers a captivating look into Jewish history and identity through the lens of the pig.
