Synopsis

Igala Political Order explores the sophisticated governance and economic systems of the precolonial Igala Kingdom in West Africa, revealing how it achieved remarkable political stability and prosperity for centuries, despite lacking extensive written records. The book argues the kingdom's success stemmed from balancing a centralized monarchy (the Ata) with the influence of aristocratic lineages (Igala Mela), and decentralized village autonomy, alongside strategic engagement in regional trade. This challenges simplistic views of precolonial African states, highlighting a complex interplay of power and governance.

The book examines the kingdom's historical context, dissects its political architecture by exploring the roles of the Ata, aristocratic clans, and local governance, and investigates its economic foundations, including agriculture, regional trade, and adaptation to the transatlantic slave trade. Using oral traditions, early European accounts, archaeological findings, and linguistic analysis, the book presents a multifaceted perspective.

This interdisciplinary approach offers valuable insights into state formation and resilience, contributing to African history, political science, and economic history. By examining the historical roots of governance and regional relations, Igala Political Order provides a framework for understanding contemporary political challenges in Africa.

The book progresses through the kingdom's history, political structures, and economic activities, providing a nuanced understanding of precolonial statehood and challenging conventional wisdom.

Though it might be hard to believe, the Americans did not have a covert operations organization when they joined World War II, and like the British, it took them some time to realize it could be a powerful tool. As a result, the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) was not established until June 13, 1942, six months after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Nevertheless, during World War II, all the hard work in the United States led to the growth of the OSS into an organization with over 13,000 staff and 40 offices scattered across the world. Its purposes were initially similar to that of Britain’s Special Operations Executive, including espionage, sabotage, and intelligence assessments, but with time and experience, it expanded to include economic, psychological, and guerrilla warfare, as well as counter-intelligence work. And of course, it would all chart a path for the early days of America’s most famous intelligence agency, the CIA.
The agency has done some good things, and it has inarguably done some bad things. Naturally, people tend to remember the most controversial operations, from CIA-funded revolutions to the Bay of Pigs and domestic experiments such as the mysterious Project MK-Ultra. Many decisions were made, either by the agency or by those elected to give the agency direction, in the raw emotions of the Cold War, and this also colored many of the decisions. Regardless, well after Allen Dulles’ tenure as the CIA’s director, investigations uncovered the facts that the CIA did not merely operate overseas, but also conducted several operations against American citizens, which Dulles both knew about and approved.
This book looks at the operations that continue to fascinate, confuse, and disgust modern society, from the people who managed the operations to the results.

When Riak Royal attacks her in the park, Sarah finds herself more attracted to the tall, dark, and animalistic werewolf than she is afraid. With her dark purple eyes and disarming grin, Riak shakes up her life by claiming Sarah as her mate right then and there. Now instead of maybe rekindling something casual with her ex, Sarah has to figure out how Riak fits in her life no matter how commitment-phobic she is, because the alternative would be insanity.
With the help of Nina, and a whole lot of introspection, Sarah will find herself on a journey of self-discovery she never would have expected, while maybe falling in love with the werewolf she never asked for.

Once, humans were what they believed. Now, the modern person is determined by data exhaust—an invisible anthropocentric ether of ones and zeros that is a product of our digitally monitored age. Author Mark Jarzombek argues that the world has become redesigned to fuse the algorithmic with the ontological, and the discussion of ontology must be updated to rethink the question of Being. In Digital Stockholm Syndrome in the Post-Ontological Age, Jarzombek provocatively studies the new interrelationship between human and algorithm.
Forerunners is a thought-in-process series of breakthrough digital works. Written between fresh ideas and finished books, Forerunners draws on scholarly work initiated in notable blogs, social media, conference plenaries, journal articles, and the synergy of academic exchange. This is gray literature publishing: where intense thinking, change, and speculation take place in scholarship.

Honesty: The Light of Truth -...

Honesty is often considered a fundamental virtue, a cornerstone upon which trust, respect, and meaningful relationships are built. At its core, honesty means being truthful with oneself and others. It is the practice of aligning our words, actions, and thoughts with the truth, regardless of how uncomfortable or inconvenient it may be. Without honesty, connections with others become shallow, and personal integrity is compromised. In this chapter, we explore the foundational aspects of honesty and its significance in both our personal lives and society.
To understand honesty fully, we must first examine what it entails. It is not merely about avoiding lies; it is about living in alignment with the truth, expressing ourselves openly, and being transparent in our actions. Honesty goes beyond just telling the truth when asked—it involves a deep commitment to truth in every aspect of our lives. This means that our words, our actions, and our thoughts should reflect what is genuinely real, without embellishment or deceit.
The importance of honesty cannot be overstated. When we are honest, we cultivate trust—both with others and within ourselves. Trust is the bedrock of any healthy relationship, whether personal or professional. Without honesty, trust erodes, leading to misunderstandings, broken relationships, and a sense of disconnection. Moreover, honesty fosters a sense of clarity and peace within ourselves. When we live truthfully, we are no longer burdened by the weight of deceit or the need to maintain false facades. We are free to be ourselves, unencumbered by the fear of being exposed or found out.
