Synopsis

Absurdity Explained explores the concept of absurdity and its deep-seated influence on humor across history and modern society. It examines the philosophical roots of absurdity, particularly the conflict between our search for meaning and the apparent meaninglessness of the universe, as seen in the works of philosophers like Albert Camus. The book argues that humor born from the absurd acts as a coping mechanism and a form of social commentary.

Did you know that absurd humor has been used to critique power structures and challenge societal norms throughout history? The book progresses by first establishing the philosophical basis, then moving into a historical analysis of absurdity in humor, from ancient satire to early modern plays. Finally, it delves into contemporary uses, such as stand-up comedy and internet memes, revealing how modern comedians use absurdity to comment on today's political and technological landscapes.

By bridging historical perspectives with modern applications, this book provides unique insights into how societies use comedy to grapple with existential questions and established norms.

Conversations among thought leaders about the transformational applications of Polyvagal Theory.

Stephen Porges first introduced Polyvagal Theory in 1994. In the decades since, its neurobiological explanation for how our nervous system shapes behavior, communication, and health has profoundly influenced trauma treatment. Increasingly, the polyvagal perspective has also informed wellness, healthcare practice, and broader societal understanding. This exchange has been reciprocal: while PVT has influenced innovators across fields, their insights have in turn shaped the theory, pushing it toward greater relevance and practical application.

This volume presents conversations between Stephen Porges and leading figures including Bessel van der Kolk, Gabor Maté, Deb Dana, Daniel J. Siegel, Peter Levine, and others. These dialogues show how Polyvagal Theory has shaped their work and lives, while also revealing how their perspectives continue to inform and challenge the theory. Both personal and academic, reflective and forward-looking, the conversations highlight how PVT contributes to fields as varied as child development, attachment, trauma studies, and healthcare, while deepening our understanding of human resilience and healing.

Mourning Bands On is an accessible journey into the hypersensitive world of today's American law enforcement. The reader is brought into the law enforcement world through an introduction to the history, function, and development of the American police model. With an understanding of policing's role in American society, the reader is then immersed into the raucous and contentious cultural upheaval which American policing is currently experiencing.
Using well-known examples, the reader is challenged to consider how American culture is affected by critical incidents and the portrayal of those events in our media intensive world. The reader will review the cases in the deaths of Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd, as well as others. The cases are presented as a narrative of events supported by the findings and legal conclusions of the U.S. Department of Justice, Federal Bureau of Investigation. Each incident is reviewed with a view of how the incident effected American society and brought change to American culture and thus policing.
The reader will experience how American policing has changed through legislative, societal, and cultural pressure resulting from the reviewed critical incidents. With an appetite for more, the reader is encouraged to further explore the relationship between societal norms and American policing.
The work concludes with a final challenge to the reader. How do we, as a society, reform American policing to move forward after this unprecedented period of cultural change? The author offers several possible reforms to enact, what can you add to the conversation?

It is often said that the special bond between Britain and the United States was forged in war between President Roosevelt and Winston Churchill. But the closer link in many ways was that between Churchill and Dwight Eisenhower, since it existed both in wartime from 1941 to 1945 but also again in very different circumstances.
Between 1951 and 1955, Churchill was prime minister and Eisenhower was briefly the first supreme allied commander of NATO, before going back to the United States to win the 1952 presidential race. This overlapped in the White House with Churchill’s peacetime premiership from 1953 to 1955. And from 1945 to 1951, Churchill by his speeches and Eisenhower by his tenure as first-ever supreme allied commander Europe were continuing to create the new and stable global world order that held until now.In other words, theirs was a much longer relationship than that between President Roosevelt and Churchill and spanning peace as well as war. And it was the Eisenhower and Churchill relationship that essentially created the world order that lasted down until current times.Churchill and Eisenhower can also be seen as a passing of the baton, from Britain as the fading superpower to the dynamic new world of the United States. Churchill’s relationship with Eisenhower spans this transition perfectly and is the ideal prism through which to witness this change, in terms of how the balance between the United Kingdom and the United States altered both as countries and in personal terms between the two men themselves.
