ROOM OF DEATH – Here Today and Gone Tomorrow
BOOK 1 of 3 in the DEMON GORGE TRILOGY
“Samuel Knight’s body was stolen from the house,” the policeman said in an awe-inspiring tone.
“Samuel Knight’s body was stolen! Impossible!” Jackson replied.
“Yes. You didn’t hear of it?”
“Hear of it?” Jackson echoed. “No! I haven’t heard of it whatsoever. I can’t believe it. God, Samuel’s body, was stolen. It sounds impossible to me. Do you have any clue who stole it?”
“We don’t know. It was lying in state in the living room at the home, awaiting the undertaker to pick it up.”
    “Wasn’t the body watched?”
“No. Why should it be watched? Who would have supposed for one single minute someone would come and steal the body?”
“We don’t have any idea. Tim Collins, the undertaker, arrived this morning and found the body gone. One of the windows was open in the room, and Doctor Clair was the only one with a key.”
“Any theories on who might have done something like that?”
“The Chief thinks someone hid under the table with a big cloth hanging to the floor draped over it. So, someone hid under the cloth until all was quiet and the door locked and then came out, stole the body, and went out the window.”
“I’ve never heard of anything like this in all my life,” exclaimed Jackson.

Nine strangers receive a list with their names on it in the mail. Nothing else, just a list of names on a single sheet of paper. None of the nine people know or have ever met the others on the list. They dismiss it as junk mail, a fluke—until very, very bad things begin happening to people on the list.
First, a well-liked old man is drowned on a beach in the small town of Kennewick, Maine. Then, a father is shot in the back while running through his quiet neighborhood in suburban Massachusetts. A frightening pattern is emerging, but what do these nine people have in common? Their professions range from oncology nurse to aspiring actor, and they’re located all over the country. So why are they all on the list, and who sent it?
FBI agent Jessica Winslow, who is on the list herself, is determined to find out. Could there be some dark secret that binds them all together? Or is this the work of a murderous madman? As the mysterious sender stalks these nine strangers, they find themselves constantly looking over their shoulders, wondering who will be crossed off next…

It was only a few months ago that the ladies of Arlo's Friday Night Book Club—Fern, Camille, and Helen—solved the murder of the renowned author, Wally Harrison. So when they select Wally's bestseller, Missing Girl, for their next discussion, Arlo is hopeful it will be the end of their mystery hunt. But since their recent success as sleuths, the crew officially see themselves as a women's mystery club, and they're convinced Missing Girl was inspired by a fifty-year-old cold case. It's a case from their own Sugar Springs, Mississippi—the disappearance of Mary Kennedy—and Arlo can do little to stop the book club ladies from investigating. What starts out as a fun hunch quickly turns into a very real cold case murder mystery when a young girl is murdered in the exact place the women believe Mary went missing all those years ago. It's clear the two cases are connected—and the mystery book club is determined to find answers. With Arlo's help, they may just be able to crack the case.

Carlos Fuentes, Mexico's leading novelist, author of The Old Gringo, Terra Nostra and The Death of Artemio Cruz, has produced what is probably the first Third World spy thriller, an action-filled, quick-paced novel of intrigue as contemporary as a headline. The Hydra Head has a constant political reality as backdrop: the permanent tension in the Middle East and the vast new oil resources of Mexico, the setting for a brilliant attempt to portray the diversity of one man's experience.
