Synopsis

In The Artificial Man (1929), pioneering science fiction author Clare Winger Harris explores the haunting boundary between flesh and machine, mind and soul. 
When star athlete George Gregory loses his leg in an accident, despair consumes him. As his body continues to fail through subsequent tragedies, he turns to science—replacing his limbs and organs with mechanical ones, determined to prove that human identity can survive without the body. But as his transformation deepens, George’s obsession with artificial perfection drives him into isolation, madness, and murder. 
Both a cautionary tale and a philosophical exploration of what makes us human, The Artificial Man stands as one of the earliest stories to feature a fully mechanized person—a precursor to modern cyberpunk and transhumanist fiction. Clare Winger Harris, one of the first female voices in science fiction, delivers a tale as visionary as it is tragic: the warning that progress, without compassion, can strip away the soul.
