Sinopse

In this intimate collection of poems, Christina Metaxa explores the delicate balance between drowning and floating, between isolation and connection, between silence and sound. Through rhythmed contemplations of solitude, family bonds, and spiritual questioning, these verses trace the journey from depths of loneliness to moments of transcendent buoyancy. Written in both English and French, with occasional Greek phrases that root the work in its Mediterranean context, Afloat invites readers to navigate the currents of human experience—from the raw edges of personal pain to the gentle lift of hope. Like plankton, which the poet describes as “a drifting jewel of the sea,” these poems drift between darkness and light, always seeking that crucial moment when one chooses to “face up” toward the sky.

Glory Bishop lives her life in pieces. At work and with her friends, she reads novels, speaks her mind, and enjoys slow dances and stolen kisses with her boyfriend, JT. But at home, Glory follows strict rules and second-guesses every step. Though she dreams of going to college and living like a normal teenage girl, her abusive mother has other ideas.
When JT leaves to join the navy, Glory is left alone and heartsick. The preacher's son, Malcolm Porter, begins to shower her with lavish gifts, and her mother pushes Glory to accept his advances. Glory is torn between waiting for true love with JT or giving in to the overzealous Malcolm.
When a stranger attacks Glory on the street, Malcolm steps in to rescue her, and her interest in him deepens. But the closer she gets to him, the more controlling he becomes. Glory must eventually decide whether to rely on others or to be her own savior.

James Russell Lowell was born on 22nd February 1819 in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Lowell graduated from Harvard in 1838, and thence on to earn a law degree from Harvard Law School.
His literary life began in 1841 with his first published collection of poetry. Three years later he married Maria White and they had several children although, sadly, only one was to survive childhood.
A consuming issue at the time was the abolition of slavery. Lowell was a staunch supporter even going so far as to move to Philadelphia to edit an abolitionist newspaper. His poems were fully in support of Emancipation and the ending of this terrible abomination. His later views were milder and came in for some criticism.
His publication in 1848 of the long poem ‘A Fable for Critics’, satirising the poets and critics of the then current poetry scene caused an uproar. That same year came ‘The Biglow Papers’, which increased his fame and his finances. His use of the Yankee accent in his character’s dialogue was an inspiration for many.
Maria died in 1853 and Lowell decided to travel to Europe for some time before returning to Harvard to take up a professorship of languages. In 1857 he re-married and also took on the editorship of that key periodical ‘The Atlantic Monthly’ whilst continuing to teach at Harvard.
Lowell wrote and published poetry and essay collections throughout his literary career and is acknowledged as one of the ‘Fireside Poets’, a group of New England poets that rivalled the popularity of British poets. Their work was not controversial and suitable for whole families to enjoy hence their name and appeal. Whilst Lowell’s own work does not now attract the same praise as his then contemporaries, he was their equal.
Towards the end of his life Lowell was appointed as ambassador to the Kingdom of Spain and later to the Court of St. James's.
His last years were a return home to his estate in Cambridge, Massachusetts. By the summer of 1891 doctors had diagnosed cancer in his kidneys, liver and lungs. There was nothing that they could do except prescribe opium for the pain.
James Russell Lowell died on the 12th of August 1891 on the Cambridge estate where he was also born. He was 72.

I hate to be the one to tell you...

It's a shame, isn't it, to have to rat on your neighbours? Upsetting to find out that both your husband and the dog have been telling you lies? And I hate to be the one to tell you this, but there are bad people everywhere, at large, going about their business. Financial insolvents on online-dating sites, contortionist plumbers with a point to prove, and a bloke named Barry, from Halifax, who is singlehandedly ruining the livelihoods of perfectly legitimate psychics.
It's not all bad news though, there are sham marriages to look forward to, ducklings to be held captive by, and that dog, well, you can always put him up for sale. Life, I'm afraid, is based on nothing more than slippery moorings, and this debut pamphlet breaks the bad news with humour and a twist of darkness.
The poems in this collection erupt with beauty and emotional resonance. These are graceful meditations on human relationships with each other and with themselves. The voice of the poet is strikingly unique, but there are also moments when it seems to be coming from within us, from the place of personal wonder: 'Outside a wood-pigeon coos monotonously / its slung together nest is hidden from view, / just like your knickers are, mostly, / and your feelings about your mother.' – Romalyn Ante, co-judge of the International Book & Pamphlet Competition
