Synopsis

Theo Engela's short stories were written during the 1950's and 60's, and set in the South African bushveld and society of the day. Today they provide a fresh glimpse at a world now long vanished.
Using imagery and place-names unfamiliar to 21st century people, the author introduces the reader to a simpler, less complicated world filled with wonder and mystery, where crime could still be perfect and the world lived fearfully under the ever-present threat of the Cold War.
Mesmerizing African folklore and almost-vanished cultures stand side by side. Rounded off in his own unique style, Theo Engela displays a biting sense of wit and irony in his work, which would probably not seem out of place in a Hitchcock serial or even in the Twilight Zone.

“There’s the drive back home, invariably in the dark. Not safe.”
“She has plenty of space. We could have just stayed over.”
Linda shook her head. “No. Not allowed. Against the rules.”
“What do you mean?” Andrew took off his glasses and frowned at her. “Hodgey was always begging us to stay the night. I’ve never understood—”
Linda drummed her fingers on her knees.“It’s just a thing, okay? An agreement.”
Andrew’s furrows deepened. “Between you and Hodge?”
“Between Peter and I. We sibling-swore.”
“‘Sibling-swore’? What are you two? Twelve?”
Linda stopped drumming. “We were sixteen, if you must know.”
Andrew laughed. “Why? Is the house haunted?”
    “In a way.”
He stopped laughing, perhaps remembering that Linda had lost her parents when she was sixteen. “In a way?”
“Bad things happen. If you stay over.”

Stacy Aumonier was a British writer best known for his outstanding short stories. Nobel Prize-winner John Galsworthy described Aumonier as 'one of the best short story writers of all time' and predicted that he would 'outlive all the writers of his day'. Aumonier wrote over 85 short stories in his lifetime. He has been described as the 'British Maupassant', owing to his captivating plots and his ability to create complex characters with just a few lines of carefully selected prose. His intensely visual prose meant his works were readily adaptable to the cinema screen, and several of his short stories were adapted by Alfred Hitchcock.'One Law for the Rich' is the tale of two brothers, one a rich and successful businessman, the other a poor man whose business only just makes ends meet. At a cousin's funeral, both men catch a stinking cold. One is able to afford the best doctors and medicines London can provide...the other must rely on home remedies. But how will each invalid fare?

With a horse between his thighs and a weapon in his grip, the dashing Brigadier Etienne Gerard, Colonel of the Hussars of Conflans, gallops through the Napoleonic campaigns on secret missions for his beloved Emperor and his country. He encounters danger and hair-breadth escapes but never loses his bravado, his eye for a pretty girl, his boastfulness or his enormous vanity. Gerard is Conan Doyle’s most lovable character. At times hilarious, at times touching, these stories are amongst Conan Doyle’s most popular.
