Beschreibung

We love ghost stories here at Wildside Press—witness the fact that we have now now reached our eighth volume in this series. Very few other genres are so versatile and enduring as tales of the supernatural. Ghosts can (and have) appeared in literature for thousands of years, in all countries and continents (and times past, present, and future) throughout the world. But the Victorian era particularly seemed to embrace ghost stories, and that’s when Christmas ghost tales became not just a staple of literature, but a requirement. Seemingly all British fiction magazines (and many newspapers) had to publish at least one ghostly tale in the month of December.Proving that the ghost story tradition is strong to the present day, we have an original story from Phyllis Ann Karr (author of the Frostflower and Thorn series), plus two drawn from Alfred Hitchcock’s Mystery Magazine (which strayed a little more into the fantastic and horrific in the 1960s that it does today), plus another modern story by Wallace West, who is best known as a science fiction writer. Good stuff. Here is the complete lineup:

UNSEEN—UNFEARED, by Francis Stevens

RUNNING WOLF, by Algernon Blackwood

UNCLE CHRISTIAN’S INHERITANCE, by Erckmann-Chatrian

MOMMY, by Mary Elizabeth Counselman

From the critically acclaimed author of In Cuba I Was a German Shepherd comes a new novel about the search for freedom and the power of community that spans decades of residents in one Florida apartment

The Helena is an art deco apartment building that has witnessed the changing face of South Miami Beach for seventy years, observing the lives housed within. Among those who have called apartment 2B home are a Cuban concert pianist who performs in a nursing home; the widow of an intelligence officer raising her young daughter alone; a man waiting on a green card marriage to run its course so that he can divorce his wife and marry his lover, all of whom live together; a Tajik building manager with a secret identity; and a troubled young refugee named Lenin. Each tenant imbues 2B with energy that will either heal or overwhelm its latest resident, Lana, a mysterious woman struggling with her own past.

Examining exile, homesickness, and displacement, The Apartment asks what—in our violent and lonely century—do we owe one another? If alone we are powerless before sorrow and isolation, it is through community and the sharing of our stories that we may survive and persevere.

A forensic psychiatrist’s investigation into an infamous Louisiana serial killer leads him down a dangerous path of obsession as he discovers they share the same cursed blood. This chilling debut horror novel will captivate readers of Chasing the Boogeyman and What Moves the Dead and fans of True Detective. In 2008, a serial killer known as the Cajun Cannibal brutally murders and consumes the flesh of eight people in a small Louisiana parish. With law enforcement closing in on him, he takes his own life before he can face the inside of a courtroom.Ten years later, when forensic psychiatrist Dr. Vincent Blackburn discovers he and the Cajun Cannibal are more closely connected than he realized, he begins a case study into the sociopathy behind the killer’s grisly deeds, only to find a torrent of small town politics, interracial family dynamics, and whispers of the supernatural muddying once clear waters. When copycat killings start anew, Vincent is thrust into the center of it all, putting his life, his family, and his own sanity at risk. As monsters—both figurative and literal—begin to manifest, Vincent discovers that untangling the truth from the lies is only the beginning of his nightmare.Told through the pages of Dr. Vincent Blackburn’s case study memoir, and certain to appeal to readers of A Flicker in the Dark, this macabre psychological horror will leave your heart racing.

When the world threatened to end, a select few went into an underground complex and left those above to survive any way they could. Scientist Faith Hamilton and her grown daughter Josie are two of the abandoned. A Barricade around the entrance to the bunker ensures those below would never be allowed out.
Twenty years later they start hearing strange voices, seeing shadows within. Those below start to appear in the inner circle of the Barricade asking to be let out. Those above still refuse. Faith and her friends discover it hasn't isolated them as they thought, that in fact there has been communication and manipulation by those underground all this time.
"...a monstrously grim dystopian tale exposing the human condition with all its frailties. Uncovering themes of abandonment, trauma, and mental health The Barricade examines exactly how far we might be prepared to go to survive the impossible, both as individuals and as a species. Provocative and compelling." -Lee Murray
"...Ellis presents the worst kind of dystopia: one which is all too believable, especially in the actions of the few who remain. With a diverse cast, and a compellingly underrepresented choice of protagonist, the author's unique voice and perspective bring this post-apocalyptic world to chilling life." - Kev Harrison
"...Stephanie Ellis has created a story where the strength of older women is celebrated. Topics usually shied away from, such as menopause, are part of the story just as they are part of everyday life for many of us. Her heroines are human, and it's the limitations they overcome that make them special. A riveting story that doesn't flinch from the worst in us and, in spite of this, somehow left me feeling stronger. An empowering narrative that will lodge in your thoughts for a long while." -Angela Yuriko Smith
