Synopsis

An insightful and haunting new collection from Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Charles Simic

Irreverent and sly, observant and keenly imagined, Come Closer and Listen is the latest work from one of our most beloved poets. With his trademark sense of humor, open-hearted empathy, and perceptive vision, Charles Simic roots his poetry in the ordinary world while still taking in the wide sweep of the human experience.
From poems pithy, wry, and cutting—“Time—that murderer/that no has caught yet”—to his layered reflections on everything from love to grief to the wonders of nature, from the story of St. Sebastian to that of a couple weeding side by side, Simic’s work continues to reveal to us an unmistakable voice in modern poetry. An innovator in form and a chronicler of both our interior lives and the people we are in the world, Simic remains one of our most important and lasting voices on the page.

William Collins Books and Decca Records are proud to present ARGO Classics, a historic catalogue of classic prose and verse read by some of the world’s most renowned voices. Originally released as vinyl records, these expertly remastered stories are now available to download for the first time.
‘Fortune brings in some boats that are not steered.’
Cymbeline is believed to be one of Shakespeare's final plays and is about deceit, pursuit and seduction.
King Cymbeline of Britain banishes his daughter Innogen's husband, who then makes a bet on Innogen's fidelity. Innogen is accused of being unfaithful, runs away, and becomes a page for the Roman army as it invades Britain. In the end, Innogen clears her name, discovers her long-lost brothers and reunites with her husband while Cymbeline makes peace with Rome.
All of the Shakespeare plays within the ARGO Classics catalogue are performed by the Marlowe Dramatic Society and Professional Players. The Marlowe was founded in 1907 with a mission to focus on effective delivery of verse, respect the integrity of texts, and rescue neglected plays by Shakespeare’s contemporaries and the less performed plays of Shakespeare himself. The Marlowe has performed annually at Cambridge Arts Theatre since its opening in 1936 and continues to produce some of the finest actors of their generations.
Thurston Dart, Professor of Music at London University and a Fellow of Jesus College Cambridge, directed the music for this production.
The full cast includes: Denis McCarthy; David Rowe-Beddoe; Ian Lang; Terrence Hardiman; Andrew Parkes; John Sharpe; Roger Hammond; Tony White; Peter Orr; David Coombes; Philip Strick; Tom Bussman; John Tracy-Phillips; Trevor Nunn; Tom Bussman; Michael Burrell; Gillian Webb; Margaret Drabble; Micheline Samuels.
This top performing theatre production, hailed as one of the best, brings to life the European essence of Shakespeare's work. The cast's delivery of the prose and verse is a testament to their dedication and talent.
For fans of Richard Parsons (GCSE English Shakespeare Text Guide), and Arthur Miller (Incident at Vichy).

Stephen Mitchell's marvelously clear and vivid rendering recreates the robust masculine music of the original. It both hews closely to the Old English and captures its wild energy and vitality, not just as a deep "work of literature" but also as a rousing entertainment that can still stir our feelings and rivet our attention today, after more than a thousand years. This new translation - spare, sinuous, vigorous in its narration, and translucent in its poetry - makes a masterpiece accessible to everyone.

“All Lesser Creatures” takes an often-used mythologic monster idea and twists into a new direction. You will see the more familiar take on the idea in the story as well but also as seen in a very different light. This story realizes the full potential of a certain basic idea, just as the main character realizes the full and awesome potential of he and his kind, who previously believed themselves to be without defenses. The story is comprised of:
    • A simple man who suffers an accident leaving him with a bizarre condition
    • This man coming to accept and even enjoy his new lifestyle thanks to newfound community
    • Several unusual creatures with amazing abilities
    • Unexpected twists on an old idea, taking it to new places and to a new level
    • A tale of triumph over vicious oppression by the downtrodden underdogs
    • A new appreciation for a wide variety of animals
“All Lesser Creatures” is a refreshing and positively affirming story. If you feel like the world has got you down and there’s nothing you can do about it, just look to the example set by Gary Landry (the main character) and his friends. Your situation and the appropriate response will almost certainly not be the same but the message is clear: don’t underestimate or give up on yourself. Realize your true potential.
