Beschreibung

Although it has been said of human nature that the more it changes the more it is the same thing, it is yet true that at different epochs it is actuated by widely different ideas. The underlying passions are the same, but the forces evoking them vary so greatly that sometimes, as in considering the history of the Middle Ages, we seem to be concerned with beings from another planet. One of the most powerful of these forces is religion; and, though religion in the abstract is assumed to bring out all that is best in human nature, it has in the past only too frequently appealed to and stimulated its baser elements. The evil is due partly to erroneous religious teaching, but probably still more to the obstinate imperfection of the material on which religion has to work. The vast majority of human beings are even now incapable of appreciating and practising an absolutely pure religion, and probably no such religion has ever yet had a fair trial. Dogmatic systems there have been in abundance, but these are not to be identified with religion. It has been one of the most serious drawbacks to the claims of historic Christianity that, disregarding the spirit of its own moral precepts, it has treated religion as a mere system of belief and ceremonial observance, which has defeated the object it was intended to promote.

Obesity is becoming one of the preeminent public health concerns, with prevalence increasing throughout the world.
Covering many aspects of contemporary obesity research, this timely book by some of the leading experts in the field explores issues relating to the biology, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of obesity, including childhood obesity. The work is attuned to the needs of those living with obesity, with a chapter devoted to
the harm caused by weight stigma and false narratives around lifestyle choices.
'Obesity, the other pandemic of the 21st century' reviews the available evidence to prove that obesity should be considered not just as a key contributor towards other comorbidities, but as a disease by itself. Importantly, the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on obesity is addressed, which raised the complexity and severity of the obesity and should be a call to action for the prevention and early treatment of this disease. This book has been developed by World Obesity Federation collaborators, and is aimed at healthcare practitioners, academics, policymakers, students, patients living with obesity and all those impacted by the issue.
The research covered in these pages goes some way towards proving that obesity is quickly becoming 'the other pandemic' of the 21st century. Much like any major pandemic, the consequence of inaction is truly alarming.

Old Truths and New Clichés collects nineteen essays—most of them previously unpublished in English—by Isaac Bashevis Singer on topics that were central to his artistic vision throughout an astonishing and prolific literary career spanning more than six decades. Expanding on themes reflected in his best-known work, the book illuminates in new ways the rich intellectual, aesthetic, religious, and biographical background of Singer's singular achievement as the first Yiddish-language author to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature.

Like a modern Montaigne, Singer studied human nature and created a body of work that contributed to a deeper understanding of the human spirit. Much of his philosophical thought was funneled into his stories. Yet these essays, which Singer himself translated into English or oversaw the translation of, present his ideas in a new way, as universal reflections on the role of the artist in modern society.

Old Truths and New Clichés brims with stunning archival finds that will make a significant impact on how listeners understand Singer and his work. Singer's critical essays have long been overlooked because he has been thought of almost exclusively as a storyteller. This book offers an important correction to the record by further establishing Singer as a formidable intellectual.
