Synopsis

This edition includes the following editor's introduction: The importance of Charles Fort's "The Book of the Damned" as a precursor of pseudoscience

Originally published in 1923, “New Lands” is the second nonfiction book of the American author Charles Fort.

There are many books that tell of sightings of ghosts, aliens, and strange animals, but Charles Fort's "New Lands" is perhaps the only book in which whole continents, geographies, and, indeed, planetary systems themselves are seen in the same uncertain twilight of perception. "New Lands" deals primarily with incredible astronomical anomalies.

Fort expands in “New Lands” on his theory about the Super-Sargasso Sea – a place where earthly things supposedly materialize in order to rain down on Earth – as well as developing an idea that there are continents above the skies of Earth. As evidence, he cites a number of anomalous phenomena, including strange "mirages" of land masses, groups of people, and animals in the skies. He also continues his attacks on scientific dogma, citing a number of mysterious stars and planets that scientists failed to account for.

Code White - Sounding the Alarm...

When health care workers call a Code White, it’s an emergency response for a violent incident: a call for help. But it’s one that goes unanswered in hospitals, clinics, and long-term care homes across the country. Code White exposes a shocking epidemic of violence that’s hidden in plain sight, one in which workers are bruised, battered, assaulted, and demeaned, but carry on in silence, with little recourse or support.

Researchers Margaret M. Keith and James T. Brophy lay bare the stories of over one hundred nurses and personal support workers, aides and porters, clerical workers and cleaners. The nightmarish experiences they relate are not one-off incidents, but symptoms of deep systemic flaws that have transformed health care into one of the most dangerous occupational sectors in Canada.

The same questions echo in the wake of each and every brutal encounter: Is violence and trauma really just “part of the job”? Why is this going underreported and unchecked? What needs to be done, and how?

The Black Death, one of the most devastating pandemics in human history, left an indelible mark on the medieval world. From the mid-14th century, this catastrophic event wiped out an estimated one-third of Europe's population, with ramifications extending far beyond the immediate loss of life. Its legacy endures, not only in historical accounts but also in the cultural, social, and economic transformations it triggered.

The pandemic’s unparalleled scale of mortality created a sense of collective trauma that shaped the mindset of medieval society. Fear, uncertainty, and grief were pervasive, leading to widespread shifts in religious devotion and philosophical thought. For some, the plague strengthened their faith, prompting public acts of penance and increased church attendance. For others, it inspired skepticism about religious authority, paving the way for future reforms and dissent. This dual response reflects the Black Death's role as both a destroyer of tradition and a catalyst for change.

Economically, the pandemic dramatically altered the medieval labor market. The decimation of the population led to acute labor shortages, forcing landowners to offer better wages and conditions to retain workers. This shift empowered peasants and contributed to the gradual erosion of the feudal system, giving rise to a nascent middle class. The newfound leverage of laborers sowed the seeds of social mobility, challenging the rigid hierarchies that had long defined medieval life.

Bond—James Bond. In the 80s and 90s, the debonair superspy's games failed to live up to the giddy thrills of his films. That all changed when British studio Rare unleashed GoldenEye 007 in 1997. In basements and college dorms across the world, friends bumped shoulders while shooting, knifing, exploding, and slapping each other's digital faces in the Nintendo 64 game that would redefine the modern first-person shooter genre and become the most badass party game of its generation.

But GoldenEye's success was far from a sure thing. For years of development, GoldenEye's team of rookie developers were shooting in the dark with no sense of what the N64 or its controller would be like, and the game's relentless violence horrified higher-ups at squeaky clean Nintendo. As development lagged far behind the debut of the tie-in film GoldenEye, the game nearly came out an entire Bond movie too late.

Through extensive interviews with GoldenEye's creators, writer and scholar Alyse Knorr traces the story of how this unlikely licensed game reinvigorated a franchise and a genre. Learn all the stories behind how this iconic title was developed, and why GoldenEye 007 has continued to kick the living daylights out of every other Bond game since.
