Synopsis

In "The Spanish Pioneers," Charles Fletcher Lummis delves into the rich tapestry of the Spanish exploration and settlement of the Americas, offering a meticulously researched narrative that combines historical account with vivid storytelling. Lummis exhibits a distinctive literary style that marries scholarly rigor with a captivating narrative voice, bringing to life the challenges, triumphs, and cultural encounters of these early pioneers. The book situates itself in the broader context of American history during a time when the intersection of cultures sowed the seeds for the diverse society that we know today, providing readers with a nuanced understanding of the historical forces at play. Charles Fletcher Lummis was not only a prominent historian but also an ardent advocate for the preservation of Native American culture and heritage. His extensive travels across the Southwest and familiarity with Hispanic and indigenous cultures profoundly informed his writing. Influenced by his experiences as a journalist and early advocate for environmental conservation, Lummis sought to illuminate the narratives that had been overlooked or misrepresented, giving voice to the often-ignored contributions of Spanish explorers in North America. This book is a valuable addition for anyone interested in the nuanced history of exploration in the Americas. Lummis's engaging narrative style makes it accessible to both scholars and general readers alike, inviting them to reconsider the complexities of cultural exchange and the foundational stories of the United States. It is a compelling read that will enrich readers' understanding of our historical landscape.

I want to talk to you about democracy. The real one. The one that does not exist, and the one we really need today. My research method is that of Hippocrates, who said, look for the cause of causes. In other words, to cure a disease, to solve a problem, it is useless to attack the consequences, it is useless to attack the different causes. There is always a determining cause (the one that determines all the others)—and that is our common cause.
The first decisive battle is to push the important words "right side up":
First. I am not a "citizen" (a citizen is autonomous; he votes himself his laws). I am only a "voter;" that is to say, a political child—because I am subject to the law voted into existence by someone other than me.
Second. My "parents" in politics, the elected officials, do not want me to emancipate myself from them—they do not allow me to vote for or against the laws to which I have to submit myself.
We are "the incompetents." They treat us like children. But it is our fault, because children also believe in "Santa Claus," and so voters believe in "universal suffrage," which we accept to call "democracy" (demos kratos, power belongs to the people). The so-called modern "democracy".

The arrival of Jeanne D’Arc on to the earth plane and her subsequent adventures has left an un-erasable mark in the history books.
One of the greatest remote viewers of all time, the image of Jeanne D’Arc, the legend, visionary & clairvoyant, has weaved its magic transcending time itself.
Her strength, courage and compassion is recognised by protagonists, artists, musicians and even freedom fighters. She is a symbol against oppression and injustice.
But how did Jeanne D’Arc come to be? To unravel this mystery we must be prepared to unlearn everything that popular history has insisted we believe. Only then like a jigsaw puzzle adding piece by piece, we can obtain a clearer picture and by doing so rebuild the true character of Jeanne D’Arc, the saint, the visionary, the legend.

Addiction is a subject which straddles public and personal interests; societal and criminal justice concerns; and family, social, and medical responses. It is a continuing area of uncertainty and concern for society and professionals trained in the field.

This Very Short Introduction presents the basic facts about addiction: what it is, how and why it develops, how it is treated, and how society can respond to it. Addictions to both illicit drugs and licit drugs (e.g., alcohol) are covered, as is the possibility that certain behaviors not involving drug use (e.g., compulsive gambling) can qualify as addictions. Keith Humphreys provides a jargon-free account of our present understanding of addiction, from treatment evaluations to studies on the effects of public policies. He also illuminates the personal experience of addiction and recovery. Humphreys considers why some people become addicted and others do not, what treatments exist to help people who are addicted, and how the laws and regulations society establishes about drugs affects the rate and experience of addiction.

As a child, Lucy Mangan was reading all the time, using books to navigate the challenges and complexities of this world and many others. As an adult, she uses her new relationship with literature to seize upon the most important question: (how) do books prepare us for life?Bookish vividly tells the story of a reader's life from the cusp of teenagehood, when everything—including the way we read—undergoes a not-so-subtle transformation. Lucy vividly recounts her metamorphosis from young bookworm to bookish adult, from the way school curricula impact our relationship with literature, to the growing pains of swapping the pleasures of rereading for those of book-hoarding.Revisiting the books of all genres (from literary novels and historical saga fiction to apocalyptic zombie novels) that ferried her through each important stage of life—falling in love, finding a job, becoming a mother, and navigating grief—Bookish is a coming of age story told through books. It's an ode to our favorite bookish spaces (from the smallest secondhand bookstalls to our favorite libraries, mega-bookshops, and our own bookshelves) and a love story to how books not only shelter our souls through hard times, but also how they help us connect with the people we love through shared stories.
