  When her first play, Eight, transferred from student theatre in Edinburgh to the West End and then New York, Ella Hickson was still in her early twenties. She has since built on that promise with a series of engaged and engaging dramas that pit romanticism and optimism against the realities of life as a young person in Britain.
  Eight (Edinburgh Fringe, 2008), that astonishing first success, is included here: a state-of-the-nation group portrait in monologues, 'an interactive Talking Heads for 21st-century teens and twentysomethings' (Independent).
  Also included is Hot Mess (Edinburgh Fringe, 2010), a dark and lyrical tale about twins born with just a single heart between them, and Precious Little Talent (Edinburgh Fringe, 2009; West End, 2011), about two young adults graduating into a world that's sold them down the river.
  In Boys (HighTide Festival, Nuffield Theatre Southampton and Soho Theatre, 2012), the Class of 2011 faces a tricky transition to adulthood in a play that 'powerfully captures the mood of a generation' (Independent).
  The volume also contains an introduction by the author and two short plays: the previously unpublished PMQ, part of the Coalition season at Theatre503, London, in 2010; and Gift, first seen as part of Headlong's immersive theatre production Decade in 2011.

  In many ways the title says it all. Kissing is poetry. The kiss is perhaps the most loving and intimate moment there is. It is amongst our most soothing and treasured memories. And perhaps also our most erotic.  This volume is not about the kiss of a mother to her child's scraped knee, or the father to his baby's head as he settles down to sleep. No, when the poets here talk of the kiss, they describe the longing and desire, the want and hunger to be part of something that so connects them to another that it can transcend all manner of reason and decorum.   On the hottest Sunday in July,
  the same day Mam got her first period,
  she was sent to her father's room
  to wake him for tea.
  
  
  She cried when she touched his tepid skin
  and begged him to open his eyes.
  In the fields cattle lowed, udders heavy with milk.
  
  
  Two Christmases later,
  my grandmother pressed Mam's hand
  against her abdomen,
  told her of the operation in January.
  'I'm afraid I might not wake up.'
  
  
  'You mustn't cry,
  you have to be strong for your sisters,'
  the nuns told Mam, the day before the funeral.
  
  
  She watched over her sisters
  as they stood shivering in the graveyard,
  under the shadow of a Great Oak.

  LibriVox volunteers bring you nine different readings of The Railway Bridge of the Silvery Tay, by William McGonagall, to celebrate April Fool's Day.  Scottish poet William McGonagall is widely considered to be one of the worst poets of the English language.  He wrote this poem in honor of The Tay Rail Bridge which was opened in 1878 and which subsequently collapsed a year later, causing the death of 75 train passengers, and inspiring McGonagall to write yet famously bad poem entitled The Tay Bridge Disaster.
