SHORTLISTED FOR THE NED KELLEY AWARD FOR BEST TRUE CRIME

How the New South Wales Police Force's finest solved murders in one of the most tumultuous periods in Australian history.

As Australia sank into the darkest days of the Great Depression, a succession of bloody mysteries grabbed headlines and gripped the country. The Hammer Horror, The Bungendore Bones, The Park Demon, The Human Glove and The Pyjama Girl – these were just some of the grisly cases that had to be solved by the Sydney detectives of The Murder Squad.

With the people, press and politicians screaming for justice and vengeance, homicide chief Tom McRae and his colleagues used bold new investigative tools in the massive manhunts for these maniacal killers. Working under intense pressure, hard-nosed and hard-charging cops solved some cases brilliantly – yet others were 'closed' with dodgy convictions while several shadowy figures were to get away with murder.

Set against the backdrop of our greatest economic crisis, as the federal and state governments headed for a showdown and fascist and communist thugs threatened civil war, The Murder Squad reopens the files on Australia's most chilling forgotten crimes to ask who was guilty, who was innocent, and whether some cops were as dangerous as the monsters they were hunting.

Christopher Columbus was an Italian navigator and explorer who made 4 explorations across the Atlantic Ocean, paving the course for European discovery and settlement of the Americas. His journeys were the first European contacts with the Caribbean, Central America, and South America, and were financed by the Catholic Monarchs of Spain.
Christopher Columbus is an Anglicization of “Christophorus Columbus,” a Latin name. Columbus was born in the Republic of Genoa and spoke a Ligurian dialect as his mother tongue, according to most intellectuals. He went to sea at an early age and traveled all over the world, as far north as the British Islands and as far south as Ghana. He wed Filipa Moniz Perestrelo, a Portuguese noblewoman, and resided in Lisbon for some years, but later on wed a Castilian girlfriend, with whom he had one child. Columbus, who was primarily self-taught, was skilled in geography, astronomy, and history. He created a technique to find a western sea path to the East Indies, with the objective of benefiting from the wealthy spice trade.
Christopher Columbus has had a huge impact on the discovery of the American continent, and is still honored and respected to this day, despite of the controversies around his behavior and interaction with the locals. Let’s see what these contradicting opinions are all about.

Growing up mixed race and queer in the north of Ireland, Katie Goh felt herself at odds with the culture and politics around her. In her teenage years she embarked on a journey to Longyan in the south of China with her father, to better understand her roots. But she did not find the easy, digestible answers she hoped for, and returned with only more questions about what it means to live authentically and to make sense of her identity. As she aged, she repeatedly sought ways of navigating this tension, and when her grandmother fell ill – in Malaysia – she ventured again to the land of her ancestors, now in her mid-twenties, to seek this authenticity out anew. But like an orange, cultivated through the vagaries of processes like genetic selection and grafting, she found that simple answers – simple fruit, singular, extractable – were impossible.
FOREIGN FRUIT is the author’s endeavor to flesh out these contradictions, to unpeel the layers of personhood; a reflection on identity through the cipher of the metaphorised orange, and as a journey from east-to-west and west-to-east

Giulia Farnese, a woman who traverses time to find, in this novel, her redemption.
Her real story is tachat of a woman who goes far beyond the figure of Sponsa Christi as she was known throughout the world.
The writer traces the profile of a strong woman who, once free from the trammels of a family that raised her to be obedient, rises from her ashes and the damnatio memoriæ to become the mater and the domina of the feud of Carbognano.
With an absorbing prose, and based on an historical plot of true events, the author gives back to La Bella the dignity that historical documentation has always overlooked, preferring to chase after fifth century gossip.

In an age when local daily papers with formerly robust reporting are cutting sections and even closing their doors, the contributors to The Life of Kings celebrate the heyday of one such paper, the Baltimore Sun, when it set the agenda for Baltimore, was a force in Washington, and extended its reach around the globe. Contributors like David Simon, creator of HBO’s The Wire, and renowned political cartoonist Kevin Kallaugher (better known as KAL), tell what it was like to work in what may have been the last golden age of American newspapers -- when journalism still seemed like “the life of kings” that H.L. Mencken so cheerfully remembered. The writers in this volume recall the standards that made the Sun and other fine independent newspapers a bulwark of civic life for so long. Their contributions affirm that the core principles they followed are no less imperative for the new forms of journalism: a strong sense of the public interest in whose name they were acting, a reverence for accuracy, and an obligation
