Enter a World Where the Mundane Meets the Macabre.

Nikolai Gogol was the ultimate eccentric of Russian literature, a writer who could find the cosmic absurdity in a missing nose or a provincial bribe. Before the psychological depth of Dostoevsky or the grand epics of Tolstoy, there was Gogol—the man who taught the world how to laugh at the tragedy of the human condition. This collection brings together his complete novels and longer prose works, capturing the transition from the vibrant folklore of the Ukrainian countryside to the haunted, bureaucratic streets of St. Petersburg.

This collection explores the pillars of Gogol's surreal genius:

The Master of the Grotesque: Experience a unique blend of the horrific and the hilarious, where characters are defined by their obsessions, their vanities, and their bizarre physicalities.

The Anatomy of Bureaucracy: Witness the biting satire of the Russian civil service, where the pursuit of rank and "proper" appearance leads to a total loss of the soul.

Laughter Through Tears: Discover the "Gogolian" style—a narrative voice that moves seamlessly from slapstick humor to profound, heart-wrenching pity for the "little man."

Supernatural Realism: Explore the eerie intersection of daily life and the demonic, rooted in the rich soil of Slavic myths and the cold shadows of imperial architecture.

Gogol's influence on the Russian soul is immeasurable, providing the DNA for every great Russian writer who followed. Whether you seek a riotous social comedy or a chilling delve into the uncanny, this volume is an essential cornerstone for any library of world literature and avant-garde classics.

Be careful what you wish for in the fog of St. Petersburg. Buy "The Complete Novels of Nikolai Gogol" today and own the work of a true visionary.

This precious audio work includes short stories including, amongst others, The Holly Tree, the first part of Holiday Romance and three pieces from Mugby Junction. Some items requiring a little further explanation are Prince Bull, written as a fairy tale, but in reality a scathing attack on the Government's handling of supplies to the troops in the Crimean War; Old Lamps for New Ones in which Dickens makes clear his low opinion of the ethos of the Pre-Raphaelite school of painting; and Frauds on the Fairies, a polemic against George Cruikshank's bowdlerization of fairy tales for moralistic purposes, and the interesting revelation that 'product placement' is by no means a new phenomenon.

With narration by Emmy Award-nominated actor Geoffrey Giuliano.

René Karl Wilhelm Johann Josef Maria Rilke was born into a troubled marriage on the 4th December 1875 in Prague, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. His mother, having previously lost a baby girl, would dress the young boy up in girl’s clothing.
Later his father dispatched him to a military academy at age 10 but after a miserable 5 years the young Rilke left due to illness and instead entered first Prague and then Munich and finally Berlin university to study art history, philosophy and literature.
His initial forays into literature was in poetry. His intense, mystical and lyrical style was much admired and over time inspired many in succeeding generations.
His short prose collection ‘Stories of God’, written in an impassioned burst over several nights was published in 1900 and offers a beguiling view of much of Rilke’s influences and outlook.
The following year he married the pioneering sculptor and artist Clara Westhoff. The union produced one child, a daughter Ruth.
He lived in Paris for most of the Century’s first decade where he mixed with many great minds of the time. Although he continued to write he also worked as a secretary to the sculptor, Rodin.
It was only after they settled in Switzerland in 1919 that his writing output was in full flow. Here he wrote profusely in both German and French, which included much on his previous travels, his left-wing sympathies, his religious and existential thoughts, all part of a unique and consummate style.
From 1923 on, Rilke increasingly struggled with his health which was now in constant decline and often spent time rehabilitating at a sanatorium.
Rainer Maria Rilke died of leukaemia on the 29th December 1926 in Montreux, Switzerland. He was 51.
