Their natural tendency to use talking as a primary form of communication is essential to their experiences and successes in sports. Women and girls tend to have BFFs, collaborate during periods of stress, express empathy for one another, worry about themselves and others, and desire to have fun in sports, which makes their experiences of sports and competition different from their male counterparts. Female strengths are grounded in both mind and body, and they take these strengths onto the court, field, and track. There are now dozens of studies showing how the female brain and hormones operate quite differently than those of men. In 2007, three Muslim university students left the Canadian Prairies, seemingly without a trace. In the ensuing months, their disappearance raised fears that the men had become "radicalized," posing a grave threat to national security. From presidential briefings and targeted drone assassinations to a politically charged trial, the men's story sheds new light not only on the figure of the "radical," but also on the "moderate" Muslim, represented by a community forever changed by the men's departure.

Homegrown Radicals offers a case study of the complex entanglements of the radical and moderate Muslim in post-9/11 North America. Youcef Soufi brings these figures together, providing insight into how state violence has inextricably tied them together. Focusing on the radicalization of the three students, the book traces the general sense of affective injury among North American Muslims over the loss of Muslim life in Western military campaigns overseas. In this context, a new theory of jihad rooted in a Muslim utopian imagination emerged, marking a significant rupture with premodern Islamic thought. The three "radicals" were among thousands of Anglophone Muslims who found this new theory compelling as both a diagnosis and a solution to the violence unleashed in the War on Terror. The book examines how and why this theory resonated, as well as its consequences.

The history of selling sex is a hidden one—and too often its practitioners are pushed to the margins of history. This book redresses the balance, revealing the history of the sex trade through the eyes of sex workers, from medieval streets to Wild West saloons, and from brothels to state bedrooms.

Harlots, Whores & Hackabouts' chapters are structured thematically in a broadly chronological order, each one introducing a lively cast of complex and entertaining characters operating in an array of different periods, locations, and settings. In ancient Mesopotamia, the harlot Shamhat was powerful and respected, able to civilize the wild man Enkidu through her charms. In medieval London, Elizabeth Moryng serviced religious clergy under the guise of an embroidery business, though she was eventually jailed for being a prolific panderer and bawd. In the hedonistic floating world of Edo, Japan, Kabuki actresses and geishas entertained and pleasured their patrons. Lister's engaging and illuminating tales invite listeners to look, listen, and reconsider everything they thought they knew about the world's oldest profession. Together, these captivating tales of sex workers from around the world and throughout history provide a powerful context to contemporary debates about sexuality and the empowerment of women.

Personality disorders are complex mental health conditions that affect the way individuals think, feel, and behave, often leading to difficulties in relationships, work, and daily life. Unlike temporary mood swings or behavioral patterns influenced by stress, personality disorders are deeply ingrained and persistent, typically emerging in adolescence or early adulthood. These disorders shape a person’s worldview, emotional responses, and interactions with others, often resulting in distress for both the individual and those around them.
Personality is a unique combination of traits that influence how a person perceives and responds to the world. In individuals with personality disorders, these traits become rigid and maladaptive, making it difficult to function in a socially acceptable or emotionally stable way. The severity of symptoms can vary, but in many cases, individuals struggle with emotional regulation, self-image, and interpersonal relationships. Some may withdraw from social interactions due to deep-seated mistrust, while others may exhibit erratic or impulsive behaviors that create conflict.
Personality disorders are categorized into three clusters based on shared characteristics. Cluster A includes disorders that involve odd or eccentric thinking and behavior, such as paranoid and schizotypal personality disorders. Cluster B consists of dramatic, emotional, and erratic conditions, including borderline and narcissistic personality disorders. Cluster C encompasses anxious and fearful disorders, such as avoidant and obsessive-compulsive personality disorders. While these clusters help in understanding the broad patterns of personality disorders, individual experiences can differ significantly.
