Brilliantly original novelist and cultural critic Lynne Tillman became one of nearly 53 million Americans who care for a sick family member when her mother developed an unusual and little understood condition called Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus.

Instantly, Tillman's independent and spirited mother went from someone she knew to someone else, a woman entirely dependent on her children—an eleven-year process through which her mother underwent many surgeries and some misdiagnoses, while the family navigated consultations and confrontations with doctors, adjusting to the complexity of her cognitive issues, including memory loss.

With her notoriously exquisite writing style and reputation as a "rich noticer of strange things" (Colm Toíbín), Tillman describes, without flinching, the unexpected, heartbreaking, and frustrating years of caring for a sick parent.

Mothercare is both a cautionary tale and sympathetic guidance for anyone who suddenly becomes a caregiver, responsible for the life of another—a parent, loved or not, or a friend. This story may be helpful, informative, consoling, or upsetting, but it never fails to underscore how impossible it is to get the job done completely right.

Experience the gentle character of Winnie-the-Pooh through the lens of ancient Taoist principles, illustrating how simplicity, humility, and naturalness lead to a happier and more harmonious life.First published in 1982, The Tao of Pooh introduces the principles of Taoist philosophy through the gentle humor and familiar world of Winnie-the-Pooh by A. A. Milne. Rather than offering an academic study, Benjamin Hoff examines these core ideas in an engaging and accessible way.At the heart of the book is the concept of living in harmony with the Tao—the natural way of things. Pooh, with his unpretentious and sincere outlook, embodies the principle of wu wei, or “effortless action.” He does not strive to be clever or ambitious. Instead, he responds naturally to life as it unfolds. In contrast, characters such as Rabbit, Owl, Eeyore, and Tigger reflect common human tendencies toward overthinking, worry, gloom, or restless energy.Blending storytelling with philosophical insight, Hoff presents Taoism as a path of simplicity, authenticity, and inner balance. Illustrated with E. H. Shepard’s original drawings, The Tao of Pooh remains a timeless and inviting guide to finding wisdom in the uncomplicated, natural self.

After going through three elderly leaders in three years, Mikhail Gorbachev was chosen as the new General Secretary of the Soviet Union at the relatively youg age of 54 in March 1985. Gorbachev hoped to build the Soviet economy to relieve the persistent shortages of consumer goods it faced, which were caused by enormous military spending of the Soviet Union. Gorbachev tried to introduce some economic reforms, but they were blocked by communist hardliners. Gorbachev then came to the belief that the Soviet economy could not improved without political reform as well.
In comparison with other Soviet leaders, Gorbachev was leader of the USSR for a relatively short period, but the changes that took place under his leadership were monumental, including some that were intended and others that were unforeseen. Gorbachev oversaw the end of the Cold War and the peaceful transition away from communism in Central and Eastern Europe, and he ended the war in Afghanistan and many other proxy conflicts in the developing world. Gorbachev improved relations with the West and developed enough trust with President Ronald Reagan and President George H.W. Bush to decommission thousands of nuclear weapons. He also liberalized the political environment within the Soviet Union itself, increased accountability, and brought in a certain degree of democracy.
Gorbachev was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for these efforts in 1990, but his regime also left a legacy of turbulence and destruction in its wake. As a result of his policies, many Soviet people rose up against the status quo, demanding national self-determination and reviving old grievances. Gorbachev could not prevent the USSR from disbanding at the end of 1991, leaving much of the country’s economy in ruins and nationalist and ethnic conflicts that are still unresolved today.
