Beschreibung

Legal Identity Barriers examines the significant administrative and legal obstacles LGBTQ individuals face when updating identity documents, impacting their ability to access basic rights and services. The book highlights how seemingly simple tasks, like altering a birth certificate, can become insurmountable hurdles, leading to systemic discrimination. This discrimination can hinder access to healthcare, employment, and housing, demonstrating the far-reaching socioeconomic consequences of these barriers.

The book uniquely analyzes legal identity barriers across diverse jurisdictions, offering valuable insights for policymakers and advocates. It presents a comparative analysis of successful reforms alongside persistent challenges. Beginning with core concepts related to legal identity and LGBTQ rights, the book progresses through an examination of administrative procedures, an analysis of varying laws and court decisions, and an investigation into socioeconomic consequences.

Drawing from legal analyses, administrative data, and sociological studies, the book argues that these barriers constitute a form of systemic discrimination. Policy recommendations and strategies are proposed to streamline processes for updating identity documents and securing equal rights, advocating for policy changes, legal reforms, and advocacy efforts to dismantle these barriers and promote inclusivity.

Increasingly and mistakenly viewed as a single scandal within the United States government, what is commonly referred to as the Watergate scandal serves as an overarching term for a series of scandals beginning in 1971 and extending through 1974, although more than any other, it refers to the specific break-in at the Watergate Hotel and office complex in Washington, D.C. The crisis, originating in a secretive battle between the two major political parties, the Nixon White House’s paranoia, and the ensuing conflict concerning the release of confidential information to the public, induced senior government officials into committing crimes (most notoriously petty burglary) and coverups for the purposes of character assassination and inter-political espionage, and it ultimately resulted in the first and only resignation of a sitting American president, Richard Milhous Nixon. Watergate has since become so synonymous with scandal that “gate” is typically added to the end of words associated with scandals even today.
In the wake of the seemingly peculiar burglary, gradual media and judicial pursuits of the thread of scandals led from one thing to another over the following years until it began to culminate with Congressional impeachment proceedings and a momentous showdown between the President and the Supreme Court over the release of presidential tapes, a moment in which Nixon seriously considered defying the Court and initiating a constitutional crisis. When he at last surrendered them, excerpts were blatantly missing, most famously an 18 minute stretch. Given the flurry of activities, it has only been in recent years that historians have gained a full measure of the nation’s perilous status during the intense battle between the various branches of the federal government, and the American public’s view of government in general took a decidedly negative turn.

In 1952, Colorado businessman and amateur hypnotist Morey Bernstein put housewife Virginia Tighe of Pueblo, Colorado, in a trance using a technique called hypnotic regression. It had sparked off startling revelations about Tighe's alleged past life as a 19th-century Irishwoman, Bridey Murphy, and her rebirth in the United States 59 years later.
Bernstein wrote a book in 1956, The Search for Bridey Murphy, which became a New York Times best-seller, eventually being published in 30 languages in 34 countries, and was later made into a movie. In this recording you will hear one of the actual hypnotism sessions.

Although the Egyptians may not have passed their civilization directly on to later peoples, the key elements that comprised Egyptian civilization, including their religion, early ideas of state, and art and architecture, can be found among other civilizations. For instance, civilizations far separated in time and space, such as China and Mesoamerica, possessed key elements that were similar to those found in ancient Egypt. Indeed, since Egyptian civilization represented some fundamental human concepts, a study of their culture can be useful when trying to understand many other pre-modern cultures.
Today the Mesopotamians and their religion are sources of curiosity, but thousands of years ago, the religion was an integral part of their lives. From their birth to their death, deities surrounded them, and whether their social interactions were on the level of a smaller city or that of a larger nation-state, deities played key roles in the social fabric of their society. Whereas the Israelites were one people who worshipped a single god, Babylon had a succession of different dynasties derived from many ethnic groups, and since Babylonian religion originated from a plethora of sources, there were very few elements that maintained primacy throughout the city’s history. For example, the Sumerian influence resulted in citizens worshipping many deities in the city, but those numbers were reduced after the Amorites came to power.
One of the reasons Zeus remains one of the most recognizable gods in history is because of the spread of his influence. Due to the conquests of Alexander the Great, Zeus was brought along with other elements of Hellenization to Egypt and the Near East, and a few centuries later, Rome all but adopted him as their own chief god, Jupiter. From there, he was exported around the Roman Empire and fused with numerous other local gods in the process.
