Beschreibung

In "A Book of Birds," Carton Moore-Park weaves a rich tapestry of ornithological exploration that transcends mere observation to delve into the essence of avian life. Employing a lyrical prose style infused with poetic sensibility, the book combines meticulous scientific detail with vivid imagery, illustrating the intricate relationships between birds and their environments. This literary work resonates within the context of early 20th-century naturalism, echoing the sentiments of contemporaneous artists and writers who sought to capture the beauty of the natural world through an interdisciplinary lens. Carton Moore-Park was not only an ornithologist but also a passionate observer of nature who dedicated much of his life to studying the fauna of the British Isles and beyond. His experiences in the field, coupled with a profound sense of wonder for avian species, motivated him to pen this seminal work, which reflects both personal insight and a broader ecological consciousness. Moore-Park'Äôs unique perspective as a naturalist and artist allows readers to witness the interconnection of humanity and nature through the eyes of birds. This book is highly recommended for nature lovers, literary enthusiasts, and anyone with a curiosity about the avian world. With its blend of scientific inquiry and poetic expression, "A Book of Birds" serves as both an informative resource and a meditation on the beauty of flight and freedom, inviting readers to see the world anew through the lens of our feathered companions.

The thrilling story of a pioneering conservationist working with dogs to protect wildlife from poachers.
Conraad de Rosner is one of the first game rangers to focus on working with specially trained dogs to protect wildlife from poachers – both 'bushmeat' poachers, who use cruel snares to trap animals, and criminal syndicates killing for rhinoceros horn and capturing critically endangered pangolins, the most trafficked animal in the world.
Con's life – constantly at risk from poachers, wildlife and even his own fellow rangers – has been saved on numerous occasions by his devoted canine companions. His first dog, Zingela, a Weimaraner, saved Con from near certain death at the hands of two fellow rangers; on another occasion, Zingela alerted Con to a concealed wounded buffalo, one of Africa's most dangerous animals, about to charge.
When Zingela was tragically killed, hit by a car while Con was away, the only meagre consolation was that Con had kept Landa, one of the nine puppies sired by Zingela. Landa followed in his father's footsteps as the leader of the canine anti-poaching team that is still operating today. Con's story is an epic of modern-day African wildlife conservation, filled with courage, adventure and romance.

The First Astronomers is the first book to reveal the rich knowledge of the stars and the planets held by First Peoples around the world.
Our eyes have been drawn away from the skies to our screens. We no longer look to the stars to forecast the weather, predict the seasons or plant our gardens. Most of us cannot even see the Milky Way. But First Nations Elders around the world still maintain this knowledge, and there is much we can learn from them.
These Elders are expert observers of the stars. They teach that everything on the land is reflected in the sky, and everything in the sky is reflected on the land. How does this work, and how can we better understand our place in the universe?
Guided by six First Nations Elders, Duane Hamacher takes us on a journey across space and time to reveal the wisdom of the first astronomers. These living systems of knowledge challenge conventional ideas about the nature of science and the longevity of oral tradition. Indigenous science is dynamic, adapting to changes in the skies and on earth, pointing the way for a world facing the profound disruptions of climate change.
'This book marks a profound paradigm shift in our understanding of Indigenous scientific traditions, how they are transmitted, and their relevance to life today.' Professor Marcia Langton, University of Melbourne
'A ground-breaking book of enormous scope.' Brian Schmidt, Nobel Laureate in Physics
'A glimpse into Indigenous ways of reading landscapes reflected in the night sky through ancient processes of inquiry.' Dr Tyson Yunkaporta, author of Sand Talk
'A wonderful combination of scholarship and poetry.' Dr Annette S. Lee, Lakota astrophysicist
'Beautiful, engaging, and startlingly profound.' Alan Duffy, Professor of Astrophysics
