Synopsis

True crime stories that span more than 200 years in south London history—from poisonings to passion killings.   We are all drawn to understand the circumstances that lead others to commit unforgivable acts of violence—the moment that turns a caring human being into a killer, the series of events that drive ordinary people to murderous acts of inhumanity, or the slow, premeditated steps of the callous criminal. And the circumstances—and the twisted motivation—behind such violent acts are the subject of Caroline Maxton’s fascinating investigation of individuals whose misdeeds have tarnished the history of the Croydon area.   Maxton investigates a wide range of murders and unexplained deaths, some of which are truly stranger than fiction. The events cover a span of several centuries, and the locations will be chillingly familiar to the inhabitants of Croydon. Local crimes that hit the national headlines, like the Bentley case of 1952, are covered in fresh detail, but the author concentrates on less well-known but equally intriguing, and shocking, episodes: the bizarre ‘mustard and cress’ murder of 1870, the brutal murder of Eliza Osborne in 1877, the Kenley Stud Farm mystery of 1922, the Birdhurst Rise poisoning of the late 1920s, and the notorious unsolved murder of eleven-year-old Miles Vallint of 1959

Charles Parrott is proud of his work. Not everyone can be as successful as he is at robbing banks. His job as a bootlegger in 1958 gives him the skills behind the wheel to shake anyone who dares to try to catch him. He studies each robbery, using logistics, alibies and disguises. He loves to trick and fool the FBI, and it becomes a decade long game to him. It’s as if he was born for this profession. His love of racing and being a rodeo rider tells you what you need to know about what drives him.
His wife, Reba Sue, is thought of as a straight arrow. Everyone thinks she’s a saint, but she isn’t. When his upstanding family gets dragged into his insane world, they will all stand by him.
Most people in the Adair and McCurtain Counties of Oklahoma know that he’s robbing banks, but his generosity to the down and out brings protection and alibis that are solid. He’s their very own “Robin Hood,” and they are charmed by him.
He has a rotating group of partners, taken from his circle of rodeo riders, former bootlegging buddies and childhood friends. Most of them are loyal. Some don’t last long. It’s not a job for the faint hearted.
An Oklahoma FBI agent once said that he thought Parrott was one of the best bank robbers that had ever lived. By all accounts, his story should have assured his place among notorious bank robbers in American history, but he was left out in the cold. Now his story can be told, as only his daughter can tell it.

Stories are one of mankind’s greatest artistic achievements. Whether written down or spoken they have an ability to capture our imagination and thoughts, and take us on incredible journeys in the space of a phrase and the turn of a page.

Within a few words of text or speech, new worlds and characters form, propelling a narrative to a conclusion with intricate ease. Finely crafted, perfectly formed these Miniature Masterpieces, at first thought, seem remarkably easy to conjure up. But ask any writer and they will tell you that distilling the essence of narrative and characters into a short story is one of the hardest acts of their literary craft. Many attempt, but few achieve.

When the history of the Twentieth Century is written let us hope that the few nobel ideals of our era are not entirely submerged by the scientific miracles and horrors which increasingly dominate our lives. High among such ideas must rank the recognition of women in more and more walks of life as equal partners with men, and in no area was the battle for recognition fought with greater determination then or more evident ultimate justification in the righteousness of their course then in the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps, later to become the WRAC. As Brigadier Bidwell puts it: At the heart of the question was not so much doubt about the ability or reliability of women, but an unformulated but powerful fear of the consequences of their intrusion in strength into an entity so exclusively and aggressively male as an army in the field'. He goes on to demonstrate how they managed not only to dispel that fear but but to replace it with admiration and respect which few could have dared to envisage at the outset. The Corps must be warmly congratulated upon their decision to ask Brigadier Bidwell to write their history. As an experienced military historian but nevertheless a detached observer, he brings to his task an objectivity and balance of judgement which exonerates his book from any taints of hagiography but nevertheless constitutes a record of which even the oldest regiments would be proud.

The true story of one of pro wrestling’s most charismatic, feared, and beloved icons

Who was Maurice the man, and who was Mad Dog the character? Maurice “Mad Dog” Vachon was a gold medalist, a pro-wrestling legend, and a pop culture icon — but he was also a son, husband, and father. Mad Dog explores Vachon’s career and personal struggles with painstakingly detailed historical research and through both Maurice’s own recollections and those of the people who knew him best.

As a young man, Maurice could have chosen a dark criminal path, but then wrestling and family changed him. Chronicling his slow but steady rise to prominence across America and internationally in some of pro wrestling’s most important territories, this in-depth biography shows how Vachon’s life came to be defined by the words of Mark Twain: “It’s not the size of the dog in the fight, it’s the size of the fight in the dog.” Fiercely proud, motivated, and supremely talented, Vachon’s story is also the amazing tale of how a lifelong make-believe heel became a real-life hero outside of the ring.

With a foreword by his brother, Paul Vachon, and an afterword by his widow, Kathie Vachon.
