Synopsis

'The Horror of Christmas' captures the chilling paradox between festive joy and the haunting depths of human psyche, making it a riveting addition to the genre of horror literature. This collection draws together an exceptional array of narratives from gothic to ghostly, curated from the pens of the finest Victorian and early Edwardian authors. Sprinkled among these tales are seminal pieces influenced profoundly by folk traditions and the eerie silences of winter nights during the Yuletide season, capturing a broad spectrum of literary styles from the melancholic to the macabre. Every story adds a unique undertone to the overarching theme of spectral dread blended with the warmth of the holiday season, thus painting a diverse yet unified picture of historical and personal anxieties shadowed by Christmas lights. Assembled with keen insight by esteemed literary figures such as Arthur Conan Doyle and Nathaniel Hawthorne, the authors in this collection bring to the anthology variegated backdrops of cultural and psychological landscapes. Their collective works reflect varied facets of terror intertwined with cultural festivities, echoing movements from Romanticism to the early stirrings of Modernism. Each narrative enriches the central theme by exploring the contraposition of Christmas cheer with the ghostly and ghastly, examining how tradition intertwines with fear in the collective consciousness of society. 'The Horror of Christmas' invites readers to delve into a panorama of festive dread and supernatural intrigue. Offering more than mere entertainment, this anthology serves as a cultural artifact, illuminating the darker corners of seasonal lore across different epochs and societies. It's an essential collection for those who cherish both the joy and eeriness of Christmas, providing rich insights and raising intriguing questions about why this season of light might also be a time of shadows. This anthology is a compelling invitation to reevaluate the familiar, through a lens tinted with the spectral and the uncanny.

Mary Frances Butts was born on 13th December 1890 in Poole, Dorset.

Her early years were spent at Salterns, an 18th-century house overlooking Poole Harbour. Sadly in 1905 her father died, and she was sent for boarding at St Leonard's school for girls in St Andrews.
Her mother remarried and, from 1909, Mary studied at Westfield College in London, and here, first became aware of her bisexual feelings. She was sent down for organising a trip to Epsom races and only completed her degree in 1914 when she graduated from the London School of Economics. By then Mary had become an admirer of the occultist Aleister Crowley and she was given a co-authorship credit on his ‘Magick (Book 4)’.

In 1916, she began the diary which would now detail her future life and be a constant reference point for her observations and her absorbing experiences.

During World War I, she was doing social work for the London County Council in Hackney Wick, and involved in a lesbian relationship. Life changed after meeting the modernist poet, John Rodker and they married in 1918.

In 1921 she spent 3 months at Aleister Crowley's Abbey of Thelema in Sicily; she found the practices dreadful and also acquired a drug habit. Mary now spent time writing in Dorset, including her celebrated book of short stories ‘Speed the Plough’ which saw fully develop her unique Modernist prose style.

Europe now beckoned and several years were spent in Paris befriending many artists and writing further extraordinary stories.

She was continually sought after by literary magazines and also published several short story collections as books. Although a Modernist writer she worked in other genres but is essentially only known for her short stories. Mary was deeply committed to nature conservation and wrote several pamphlets attacking the growing pollution of the countryside.

In 1927, she divorced and the following year her novel ‘Armed with Madness’ was published. A further marriage followed in 1930 and time was spent attempting to settle in London and Newcastle before setting up home on the western tip of Cornwall. By 1934 the marriage had failed.

Mary Butts died on 5th March 1937, at the West Cornwall Hospital, Penzance, after an operation for a perforated gastric ulcer. She was 46.

Once more Butts reveals her wonderful talents. Here, two sisters plan a prank on their neighbour. But when real life imitates and amplifies their idea unease and dread come to the fore.

    E. Nesbit’s The Mass for the Dead is a haunting tale of love, guilt, and the supernatural — a gothic romance where the boundaries between devotion and damnation blur in the flicker of candlelight.
When Jasper learns that the woman he loves is to marry another man — a wealthy Spaniard named Benoliel — his sleepless night turns into a waking nightmare. In the still hours before dawn, he hears a strange and beautiful music: a funeral mass for the dead. But when his beloved Kate confesses she too heard the same ethereal requiem, their destinies become entwined in a chilling mystery that stretches beyond the veil of life and death.
Driven by love, haunted by fate, and shadowed by the sins of pride and greed, The Mass for the Dead captures the eerie elegance of Victorian gothic fiction — where faith becomes fear and every vow carries a ghostly echo.
Narrated by Christopher Mireider, this dramatized performance brings E. Nesbit’s rarely heard masterpiece to life with haunting clarity and emotional depth.
Perfect for fans of Crimson Peak, The Turn of the Screw, and Wuthering Heights.
