Beschreibung

What is the enemy of man: the world, the flesh, or the devil? Sin is the ultimate enemy of man, since it is the only thing that can ultimately keep us from God, our beatitude. This traditional understanding of the Church's wisdom has led to the development of an elaborate theology of sin and its consequences, detailed here in full by Henry Cardinal Manning. He reveals in characteristic style:how venial sin leads to mortal, how sins of omission to sins of commission, andwhy sin is worse than disease.Far from causing scruples and fear, Cardinal Manning's emphasis is on the healing and pardon that God's grace and appropriate penance can bring to the soul. Ultimately, sin does not have the last say; God's grace, through our cooperative repentance, does.Henry Cardinal Manning was one of the most important converts to come out of the Oxford Movement in mid-19th-century England. Initially an Archdeacon in the Anglican Church, Manning converted to Catholicism at 43 and became a staunch priest of the true Church in England. He eventually became the second Archbishop of Westminster, the head of the renewed Catholic Church in England. He acquired the land for Westminster Cathedral in London and was instrumental in the First Vatican Council and influencing the social doctrine of the Church under Pope Leo XIII.

    Advent is for adoring Jesus.

The Christmas season is one of the busiest times of the year. But it is also a season of reflection and preparation for that special day when we mark Immanuel’s coming―the arrival of our eternal God in our own frail humanity.

This is the greatest of history's many wonders, something too stupendous to celebrate just on one day. Advent is a way of lengthening and intensifying the joy of Christmas.

These twenty-five brief devotional readings from John Piper begin on December 1 and carry us to Christmas Day. Our hope is that God would use these meditations to deepen and sweeten your adoration of Jesus and help you keep him at the center of your Christmas season.

    What's your name?

Asian Americans know the pain of being called names that deny our humanity. We may toggle back and forth between different names as a survival strategy. But it's a challenge to discern what names reflect our true identities as Asian Americans and as Christians. In an era when Asians face ongoing discrimination and marginalization, it can be hard to live into God's calling for our lives.

Asian American Christians need to hear and own our diverse stories beyond the cultural expectations of the model minority or perpetual foreigner. A team from East Asian, Southeast Asian, and South Asian backgrounds explores what it means to learn our names and be seen by God. They encourage us to know our history, telling diverse stories of the Asian diaspora in America who have been shaped and misshaped by migration, culture, and faith. As we live in the multiple tensions of being Asian American Christians, we can discover who we are and what God may have in store for us and our communities.
