Synopsis

In "The Real Pirates of the Caribbean (Complete Edition: Volume 1&2)," Captain Charles Johnson embarks on a captivating exploration of the infamous pirates who roamed the Caribbean seas during the Golden Age of Piracy. Through a rich narrative that intertwines historical accounts with vivid storytelling, Johnson provides readers with an authentic portrayal of these rogue adventurers. His use of detailed character sketches, arresting anecdotes, and well-researched maritime history situates the reader in a world where treachery and treasure coalesced amid the tumult of the 17th and 18th centuries. This literary work not only entertains but also serves as an invaluable resource for understanding the societal dynamics and cultural implications of piracy in colonial times. Captain Charles Johnson, an enigmatic figure whose true identity remains subject to speculation, is often regarded as one of the foremost chroniclers of maritime lore. His extensive knowledge of nautical life, combined with his access to firsthand accounts from sailors and outlaws, enriched his narrative, lending a gritty authenticity to his depiction of pirates such as Blackbeard and Bartholomew Roberts. Johnson's background as a sailor himself likely informed his unique insights into the pirate code and the allure of the high seas, evoking both fascination and fear. "The Real Pirates of the Caribbean" is an essential read for those captivated by the allure of the sea and the complexities of human nature. Scholars, history enthusiasts, and casual readers alike will find Johnson's vivid portrayals and meticulous research to be a treasure trove of knowledge and entertainment. The Toltec civilization emerged in central Mexico following the decline of Teotihuacan, one of the most powerful and influential cities of ancient Mesoamerica. With Teotihuacan’s fall around the 7th or 8th century, the region experienced a power vacuum, creating an opportunity for new societies to rise. Among them were the Toltecs, a people who would shape the political, military, and cultural landscape of Mesoamerica for centuries to come.
The origins of the Toltecs remain a subject of scholarly debate, but many sources trace their roots to northern Mexico, possibly the arid regions of modern-day Zacatecas or the deserts beyond. By the 10th century, they had established themselves in the Valley of Mexico, where they founded their capital, Tula. The early rulers of the Toltecs, including the semi-legendary Mixcoatl, are credited with uniting various groups under a centralized government and fostering a warrior-based society that would come to dominate the region. Mixcoatl's son, Ce Acatl Topiltzin Quetzalcoatl, is one of the most famous figures in Toltec history. Said to be both a king and a priest, he promoted the worship of Quetzalcoatl, the feathered serpent deity, and encouraged a cultural shift away from excessive militarism and human sacrifice. However, his reign was met with opposition from factions who favored more warlike practices, leading to his eventual exile. His departure, shrouded in myth, would later influence Aztec beliefs and the idea of a prophesied return.
Tula, the heart of the Toltec Empire, reflected the ambitions and architectural ingenuity of its people. Expanding over several square miles, the city featured impressive pyramids, colonnaded halls, and massive stone warriors that stood as sentinels over its ceremonial centers. The city's strategic location allowed the Toltecs to control trade networks that extended as far as the Yucatán Peninsula and beyond.

World War II was the largest and most violent armed conflict in the history of mankind. Highly relevant today, World War II has much to teach us, not only about the profession of arms, but also about military preparedness, global strategy, and combined operations in the coalition war against fascism. This book follows military operations of the US Army in Italy from 22 January to 9 September 1944.
Rome was quiet on the morning of 4 June 1944. Propaganda leaflets dropped during the early morning hours by order of the commander of the Allied 15th Army Group, General Sir Harold R. L. G. Alexander, urged Romans "to stand shoulder-to-shoulder to protect the city from destruction and to defeat our common enemies." Even though the retreating Germans had declared Rome an open city, citizens were urged to do everything possible to protect public services, transportation facilities, and communications. "Citizens of Rome," the leaflets declared, "this is not the time for demonstrations. Obey these directions and go on with your regular work. Rome is yours! Your job is to save the city, ours is to destroy the enemy."

24 hours in the airport. 24 hours to betray my husband.
An avalanche blocked the roads. Our ski trip has taken a bizarre, nasty turn.
It started on the plane. I sat in the middle of a college hockey team traveling for a photoshoot. The air was thick with their deep, vibrating voices. A musky scent flowed into my lungs…
I did something disgusting. I hope nobody noticed.
Now we’ve arrived, and we’re trapped at the airport. The hockey guys keep looking at me. One of them wants me to buy them dinner.
We have to spend the night here with them. I’m all jittery. My mind is filled with strange, uncomfortable thoughts.
I shouldn’t do this. I need to stay strong. I need to resist.

Social justice work, we often assume, is raised voices and raised fists. But what does it look like for those of us who don't feel comfortable battling in the trenches? Sustaining justice work can be particularly challenging for the sensitive, and it requires a deep level of self-awareness.

In Social Justice for the Sensitive Soul, writer Dorcas Cheng-Tozun offers six possible pathways for sensitive types: Connectors: relational activists whose interactions and conversations build the social capital necessary for change; Creatives: artists and creators whose work inspires, sheds light, makes connections, and brings issues into the public consciousness; Record Keepers: archivists who preserve essential information and hold our collective memory and history; Builders: inventors, programmers, and engineers who center empathy as they develop society-changing products and technologies; Equippers: educators, mentors, and elders who build skills and knowledge within movements and shepherd the next generation of changemakers; and Researchers: data-driven individuals who utilize information as a persuasive tool to effect change and propose options for improvement.

Cheng-Tozun expands the possibilities of how to have a positive social impact, affirming the particular gifts and talents that sensitive souls offer to a hurting world.
