Synopsis

Jake Essenger reflects on his family's wholesale produce business in South Florida, which operated in the darkness of the early morning hours. Growing up in the warehouse, Jake was influenced by its diverse staff. The legitimate produce business faced pressures from corrupt politicians, money laundering, smuggling, and even murder. As a young narrator, Jake recounts his unconventional upbringing in the 1960s market, shaped by immigrant work ethics amid the chaotic carnival environment. The narrative explores conflicts and crime intertwined with the produce business, as Jake and his family navigate dangers from crooked politicians and organized crime.
