Synopsis

Permafrost Melting explores the escalating crisis of thawing permafrost in Arctic landscapes and its profound implications for global climate stability. As temperatures rise, the permafrost thaw unleashes significant quantities of previously trapped organic carbon, almost doubling the amount currently in the atmosphere. This process accelerates greenhouse gas emissions, particularly carbon dioxide and methane, creating a dangerous feedback loop that amplifies global warming. The book connects environment, earth sciences, and geography to provide a comprehensive understanding of this planetary-scale event.

The book investigates the biogeochemical processes driving greenhouse gas release, visible impacts like thermokarst formation and coastal erosion, and the resulting social and economic consequences for Arctic communities.Drawing upon field observations, remote sensing data, and climate models, the book examines how permafrost thaw affects the carbon cycle.

It progresses from introducing permafrost composition and distribution to analyzing thaw dynamics and culminates with mitigation strategies and policy recommendations, making it a valuable resource for students, researchers, and policymakers.

Energy is Life: Why Environmentalism Went Nuclear follows Zion Lights's personal and powerful journey: from grassroots green activism to becoming one of the UK's leading advocates for nuclear energy. In a time of climate crisis, energy poverty and growing demand for clean power, she examines why long-established environmentalists like herself once feared nuclear energy, why many have since come to embrace it, and makes a compelling case for why nuclear energy must be part of the solution. Accessible, evidence-based, and deeply human, this book challenges common myths and invites readers to rethink what it really means to care for people and planet alike. If you believe in a greener, fairer future, this book just might change your mind – and give you hope.

Although Apollo 11’s successful mission to the Moon is seen as the culmination of the Space Race, and the Apollo program remains NASA’s most famous, one of the space agency’s most successful endeavors came a few years later. In fact, the Pioneer program was the most diversified sequence of any of NASA’s programs, and though they’re now remembered for being among the first probes in history to reach the Outer Solar System, the elaborate planning changed goals several times over several years before resulting in historic successes. NASA had wanted to do a Grand Tour of the Solar System toward the end of the 1970s to take advantage of the scheduled alignment of planets, which meant the Pioneer missions were meant to be test runs prior to the main events (Voyager 1 and Voyager 2), and a great many things discovered by Pioneer 10 and Pioneer 11 were essential to the successful planning of the Voyager probes.
In 1977, the Voyager spacecraft were launched from Earth to explore the outer Solar System, and incredibly, the now-ancient technology from the 1970s is still working, sending daily reports back to the planet that sent the two robotic envoys on their way over 40 years ago. Voyager 1 and 2 have done far more than accomplish their original missions. In fact, they are now exploring interstellar space, far beyond the outer planets in the cold wasteland between the stars. Each spacecraft carries a copy of a golden record which contains an introduction to Earth, should some alien civilization happen to encounter either Voyager 1 or Voyager 2. In the first Star Trek movie, writers imagined just that, creating a story of a Voyager spacecraft being captured and adapted for its own uses.

The Honey Trap - How the Good...

    Dana L. Church

The last decade has seen an explosion of urban beekeeping in the US, Canada, and Europe, a well-intentioned response to perceived threats to the global honey bee population. Many thousands of people have taken up this seemingly environmentally friendly hobby, tending backyard and rooftop hives (or paying a company to do so) and encouraging honey bees to make honey and pollinate flowers. What could be wrong with that?

Quite a lot, in fact. In The Honey Trap, scientist and author Dana Church demonstrates that despite reports to the contrary, honey bees are nowhere near extinction. Rather, their nurturing by urban beekeepers is having far-reaching and potentially devastating consequences for the 19,999 other species of bees on the planet, with knock-on effects for plants, both cultivated and wild, and our ecosystems more generally.

With engaging storytelling and a wealth of knowledge about bees and their ways, Church unravels the complexities of human interactions with our winged friends and demonstrates how dangerously selfish our thinking can be. It's a wake-up call for humanity to embrace sustainable practices and protect these vital pollinators before it's too late.
