Synopsis

Iceberg Movement explores the fascinating lives of icebergs, revealing their significant role in Earth's systems. It examines how these colossal ice chunks originate from glacial ice, tracing their journey as they calve into the ocean and drift across vast distances. Interestingly, icebergs aren't just passive objects; their melting contributes to sea-level rise and introduces vital nutrients into marine ecosystems, sometimes sparking algal blooms that affect the ocean's food web. The book details the physical characteristics of icebergs, such as their size and shape, and the forces governing their movement, including ocean currents and wind patterns. It highlights how icebergs can disturb the seabed, creating unique habitats for benthic species. This comprehensive study incorporates diverse scientific data, from satellite imagery to field studies in polar regions, to provide a complete picture of iceberg behavior. Moving across the disciplines of oceanography, climatology, and ecology, this book presents a holistic view of icebergs as dynamic components of our planet. It emphasizes their multifaceted influence on oceanic and ecological processes, rather than simply viewing them as melting hazards. This approach offers valuable insights for maritime safety and marine conservation, making it accessible to a wide audience, including students, researchers, and anyone interested in climate change and environmental science.

Harrowing journeys of animals and plants—fleeing skyrocketing temperatures—reported from the frontlines of the greatest migration of species since the Ice Age.

As humans accelerate global warming while laying waste to the environment, animals and plants must flee to the margins: on scattered nature reserves, between major highways, or among urban sprawl. And when even these places become too hot and inhospitable, wildlife is left with only one path to survival: an often-formidable journey toward the poles as they race to find a new home in a warming world. Tropical zones lose their inhabitants, beavers settle in Alaska, and gigantic shoals of fish disappear—just to reappear along foreign coastlines.

Award-winning environmental journalist Benjamin von Brackel traces these awe-inspiring journeys and celebrates the remarkable resilience of species around the world. But the lengths these plants and animals must go to avoid extinction are as alarming as they are inspirational: Sea animals—like fish—move on average forty-five miles a decade to cooler regions, while land animals—like beavers and butterflies—move eleven miles. As even the poles of the Earth heat up, we're left with a stark and irreversible choice: Halt the climate emergency now, or face a massive die-off of species, who are increasingly left with nowhere else to go.

    Welfare of Future Children The:...

Narrated by Rebecca Bennett, this open access practical guide to reproductive ethics navigates the complex subject of the policy around IVF treatment and disability screening based on the concerns around the welfare of future children. It focuses on 3 questions in order to examine these often complex philosophical issues:
    · Should we allow prospective parents using IVF to implant an embryo with a condition considered to be a disability?
    · Is routine screening for Down syndrome in pregnancy ethically acceptable, even if there is evidence that individuals may feel pressure to accept this screening?
    · Are we justified in attempting to evaluate the potential parenting ability of those trying to access fertility treatment (e.g. disabled people or individuals with past criminal convictions) and prevent access in some cases?
Rebecca Bennett walks the listener through different answers to these questions, exploring issues such as whether it is ever morally wrong to reproduce, whether we have a moral obligation to try and bring the ‘best’ children we can into existence and how we can assess the quality of future lives. There is, of course, no consensus about what the ‘right’ answers are to these questions, however answers are needed.
This area of policy and regulation is one that, Bennett argues, is heavily influenced by intuition, social norms and bias. The Welfare of Future Children invites us to question these norms and to come to a position on these issues that emphasises reason, transparency and accountability.

  • The Shocking Truth about Animal Testing - cover

    The Shocking Truth about Animal...

Animal testing has long been a cornerstone of scientific research, serving as a method to understand biological processes, test the safety and efficacy of products, and develop medical treatments. It involves the use of live animals in experiments and observational studies to explore the effects of drugs, chemicals, and other substances on biological systems. This practice, while often viewed as essential, is fraught with controversy, ethical dilemmas, and scientific scrutiny.
The origins of animal testing can be traced back to ancient Greece, where philosophers like Aristotle and Erasistratus conducted rudimentary experiments on animals to study anatomy and physiology. Over centuries, as medicine and technology advanced, the scope and complexity of animal testing expanded. By the 19th and 20th centuries, animal experimentation had become an institutionalized component of biomedical research, contributing to groundbreaking discoveries such as vaccines, antibiotics, and surgical techniques.
Today, animal testing is pervasive across multiple industries, including pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and chemicals. It is primarily used to evaluate the safety of products, ensure regulatory compliance, and develop new treatments for diseases. Animals such as mice, rats, rabbits, and primates are commonly employed because of their physiological similarities to humans, which researchers argue make them suitable models for studying human biology.
