Synopsis

At the centre of this unusual novel of chapter-long sentences lies an unusual protagonist. The survivor of a near-catastrophic fall, he finds himself possessed by peculiar, residual behaviours, the most peculiar of which is a compulsion to expel every drop of pleasure from his life by filling it with repetitive tasks and activities.

When an abnormally large, abnormally cruel red butterfly enters his apartment and torments him to the point of delusion and insomnia, he realizes the only way to free himself from its grip is to leave home for an extended period of time and do what is most abhorrent to him: be among people.

Wandering the streets, mistaken for the perpetrator of a violent assault by a compassionate university student who takes him in and seeks to rehabilitate him, he remains entirely and infuriatingly resistant to change.

Throughout, like a hurricane of events around a static eye, what an intoxicating ride - what a grand experiment – his story is.

She violated every rule of therapy to save her patient, and herself. But at what cost? Her career, her marriage, and everything she thought she knew about desire.
Surrender to Desire is an erotic lesbian romance set at Christmas, where quiet longing turns into a love that refuses to be denied. Therapist Olivia fights a losing battle against her feelings for Alison, the woman who comes to her in pieces and begins to put her back together. When their forbidden connection moves from the counselling room to carefully negotiated intimacy, both women are forced to confront who they really are. Boundaries are discussed, consent is explicit, trust is tested, and aftercare matters.
As their attraction evolves into explorations of power and submission, Olivia learns to let go of control while Alison discovers the strength of a confident dominant. Within the chosen family of the Awakening of Desire series, they find people who understand that love does not always follow conventional rules. Secrets surface, loyalties are questioned, and the holidays become a crucible for truth, forgiveness, and second chances.

At the Bay is a 1922 short story by Katherine Mansfield. It was first published in the London Mercury in January 1922 in twelve sections, and later reprinted in The Garden Party and Other Stories (1922) with a short descriptive coda which is now the thirteenth section. The story represents Mansfield’s best mature work, a luminous example of her literary impressionism. While writing it at the Chalet des Sapins, she was coming to terms with her relationship with Murry and with her own origins and identity.

Between Flowers, Monsters and Mushrooms by Ben Featherstone is a wandering collection of wonderfully imperfect poetry, short stories and unique thoughts on life, forming a contemporary poetry and literary fiction audiobook. It is inspired from the humorous, peculiar sometimes dark margins of ordinary life experience. Expect stories and poems which go against standard structures and topics, written on and off from the age of 8 to 40 years old.
Ben Featherstone is a composer and musician, some of his contemporary compositions are featured in this book, all of which are mastered at Abbey Road Studio's London.
Moving through pubs, bedrooms, streets, memories and moments of quiet contemplation, Featherstone writes about beauty where it shouldn’t exist and tenderness where it is least expected. Love appears unfinished, men behave badly, women are luminous and dangerous, and meaning is often found by accident rather than design.
This is not a book of answers. It is a book of noticing. Of walking without a map. Of humour rubbing shoulders with grief, and intimacy sitting uncomfortably between the cracks that let the light in. It is the fox looking upon the badger in the sea and realising he is not the furthest from home.
At times romantic, at times raw, and often funny in the wrong places, Between Flowers, Monsters and Mushrooms is a poetry and short stories audiobook for listeners who prefer honesty over resolution, and beauty over certainty - leaning towards writing from the heart rather than following traditional poetry and story structures.
