Sinossi

In an age where information is more accessible than ever, why has trust in media, institutions, and public figures reached an all-time low? "Crisis of Trust - How Misinformation is Reshaping Public Discourse" delves into the powerful forces at play that are reshaping the way we understand the world and engage with one another. Misinformation and disinformation aren’t just random occurrences—they are deliberate, pervasive forces that threaten to distort our perception, influence our beliefs, and fracture our society. This book examines how misinformation has eroded public trust and explores the consequences of a society that can no longer agree on what is true.

"Crisis of Trust" unpacks the mechanisms by which misinformation spreads, from social media echo chambers to biased news coverage, and investigates the psychological impacts on individuals and communities. Through compelling research, real-world examples, and expert insights, this book provides a deep analysis of the misinformation crisis, its root causes, and what can be done to rebuild trust in an era of skepticism.

In this book, you’ll discover:

The psychology behind belief formation and why misinformation is so effective at shaping opinions.
How social media platforms and algorithms contribute to the spread of misinformation.
The role of media and political agendas in amplifying mistrust and polarization.
The effects of misinformation on democracy and civil discourse.
Ways to discern credible sources of information and improve media literacy.
Strategies for rebuilding trust in institutions and fostering informed public discourse.
The societal implications of a ‘post-truth’ world and what it means for the future.
"Crisis of Trust" is essential reading for anyone concerned about the impact of misinformation on our world. Whether you’re a student, a professional, or simply a concerned citizen, this book will help you understand the current landscape of misinformation, its effects on public discourse, and the steps we can take to reclaim a shared understanding of truth. Join the conversation on how to confront this crisis and work toward a more informed, connected, and trustworthy society.

Joséphine Bonaparte, future Empress of France; Térézia Tallien, the most beautiful woman in Europe; and Juliette Récamier, muse of intellectuals, had nothing left to lose. After surviving incarceration and forced incestuous marriage during the worst violence of the French Revolution of 1789, they dared sartorial revolt. Together, Joséphine and Térézia shed the underwear cages and massive, rigid garments that women had been obliged to wear for centuries. They slipped into light, mobile dresses, cropped their hair short, wrapped themselves in shawls, and championed the handbag. Juliette made the new style stand for individual liberty.

The erotic audacity of these fashion revolutionaries conquered Europe, starting with Napoleon. Everywhere a fashion magazine could reach, women imitated the news coming from Paris. It was the fastest and most total change in clothing history. Two centuries ahead of its time, it was rolled back after only a decade by misogynist rumors of obscene extravagance.

New evidence allows the real fashion revolution to be told. This is a story for our time: of a revolution that demanded universal human rights, of self-creation, of women empowering each other, and of transcendent glamor.

This audiobook includes bonus lectures from the author's "Clothing" course she teaches as professor of art history at Barnard College, Columbia University.

AN INTIMATE PORTRAIT OF LIFE IN ONE OF THE WORLD'S RICHEST NATIONS AHEAD OF THE FIFA 2022 WORLD CUP

Just 75 years ago, the Gulf nation of Qatar was a backwater, reliant on pearl diving. Today it is a gas-laden parvenu with seemingly limitless wealth and ambition. Skyscrapers, museums and futuristic football stadiums rise out of the desert and Ferraris race through the streets. But in the shadows, migrant workers toil in the heat for risible amounts.
Inside Qatar reveals how real people live in this surreal place, a land of both great opportunity and great iniquity. Ahead of Qatar's time in the limelight as host of the 2022 FIFA Men's World Cup, anthropologist John McManus lifts a lid on the hidden worlds of its gilded elite, its spin doctors and thrill seekers, its manual labourers and domestic workers.

The sum of their tales is not some exotic cabinet of curiosities. Instead, Inside Qatar opens a window onto the global problems - of unfettered capitalism, growing inequality and climate change - that concern us all.

    Lincoln and the Abolitionists -...

    Fred Kaplan

The acclaimed biographer, with a thought-provoking exploration of how Abraham Lincoln’s and John Quincy Adams’ experiences with slavery and race shaped their differing viewpoints, provides both perceptive insights into these two great presidents and a revealing perspective on race relations in modern America.
Lincoln, who in afterlife became mythologized as the Great Emancipator, was shaped by the values of the white America into which he was born. While he viewed slavery as a moral crime abhorrent to American principles, he disapproved of anti-slavery activists. Until the last year of his life, he advocated “voluntary deportation,” concerned that free blacks in a white society would result in centuries of conflict. In 1861, he had reluctantly taken the nation to war to save it. While this devastating struggle would preserve the Union, it would also abolish slavery—creating the biracial democracy Lincoln feared. John Quincy Adams, forty years earlier, was convinced that only a civil war would end slavery and preserve the Union. An antislavery activist, he had concluded that a multiracial America was inevitable.
Lincoln and the Abolitionists, a frank look at Lincoln, “warts and all,” provides an in-depth look at how these two presidents came to see the issues of slavery and race and how that understanding shaped their perspectives. In a far-reaching historical narrative, Fred Kaplan offers a nuanced appreciation of both these great men and the events that have characterized race relations in America for more than a century—a legacy that continues to haunt us all.
The book has a colorful supporting cast from the relatively obscure Dorcas Allen, Moses Parsons, Violet Parsons, Theophilus Parsons, Phoebe Adams, John King, Charles Fenton Mercer, Philip Doddridge, David Walker, Usher F. Linder, and H. Ford Douglas to Elijah Lovejoy, Francis Scott Key, William Channing, Wendell Phillips, and Rufus King. The cast includes Hannibal Hamlin, Lincoln’s first vice president, and James Buchanan and Andrew Johnson, the two presidents on either side of Lincoln. And it includes Abigail Adams, John Adams, Henry Clay, Stephen A. Douglas, and Frederick Douglass, who hold honored places in the American historical memory.
The subject of this book is slavery and racism, the paradox of Lincoln, our greatest president, as an antislavery moralist who believed in an exclusively white America; and Adams, our most brilliant statesman, as an antislavery activist who had no doubt that the United States would become a multiracial nation. It is as much about the present as the past.
