Beschreibung

It is 9 A.D and the Roman Empire, finally cured from the years of murderous civil war, lies in peace under the rule of Caesar Augustus. In the midst of this tranquil peace, Decimus Julius Virilis has retired from the Roman legions.

After years of slugging around in the mud and fighting in one legion or the other, he has seen most of the Roman Empire, and commanded men in battle numerous times. Retiring as a Tribune, Julius and his servants move to Rome to begin their retirement in relative luxury. He soon finds himself immensely bored with the soft riches of the elite. His active mind needs a stimulus; a reason to exist. So when his distant cousin, Caesar Augustus comes to him in the night with a request, he jumps at the chance. There's a plot from within to tear apart the empire; rumors are circulating about a letter that would reveal the true identity of the mastermind behind the death of Julius Caesar.

Surrounded by danger, can Decimus finds the scurrilous liars and conspirators before it's too late?

Set in the time of the Roman Empire, While The Emperor Slept is the second book in B.R. Stateham's 'Decimus Julius Virilis' series of historical mystery novels.

The untold love story of a Roman couple destined to shape an empire—before history wrote their names.
In the heart of ancient Rome, where marble statues guard their secrets and the Senate chambers echo with whispered plots, intrigue weaves through every corner. Kyra, a young medica, arrives in Rome for an arranged marriage to a man aligned with her father's enemy. Her journey leads her to the heart of a web of mystery and espionage, where shadows cling to every cobblestone, casting a Gothic pall over her steps. Amidst this maze of secrets, forbidden attractions, and dangerous ambitions, the Tower of Malatha beckons—a refuge or a trap.
As the sun sets over the Eternal City, the Tower of Malatha stands sentinel. Its stones harbour more than mere echoes; they cradle the fate of souls entwined by ambition, love, and treachery. Will they ascend to greatness or plunge into the abyss?
Note: This is Book 1 of a documentary historical quadrilogy with mystery, espionage, romance, and gothic elements, based on the author's extensive research, travel to ancient sites, and consultation of over two hundred ancient and contemporary scholarly sources. The author is a qualifying physician and holds a master's degree in classical archaeology, achieving full grades for their thesis.
Step into the world of Ancient Rome—a story of power, intrigue, and legacy. Please note: This audiobook is temporarily autonarrated due to time and budget constraints. As a medical student, I hope to personally narrate my books in the future. Thank you for supporting independent authors.
This story presents historical figures within their time period, grounded in research rather than religious themes. Suitable for general audiences.

    Sherlock Holmes Great Adventures

The Adventure of the Beryl Coronet

A banker, Mr. Alexander Holder of Streatham, makes a loan of £50,000 (equivalent to approximately £5.76 million in 2019) to a socially prominent client, who leaves a beryl coronet—one of the most valuable public possessions in existence—as collateral. Holder feels that he must not leave this rare and precious piece of jewellery in his personal safe at the bank, and so he takes it home with him to lock it up there. He is awakened in the night by a noise, enters his dressing room, and is horrified to see his son Arthur with the coronet in his hands, apparently trying to bend it. Holder's niece Mary comes at the sound of all the shouting and, seeing the damaged coronet, faints dead away. Three beryls are missing from it. In a panic, Mr. Holder travels to see Holmes, who agrees to take the case.

The Adventure of the Copper Beeches

Violet Hunter visits Holmes, asking whether she should accept a job as governess—a job with extraordinary conditions. She is enticed by the phenomenal salary which, as originally offered, is £100 a year, later increased to £120 when Miss Hunter balks at having to cut her long copper-coloured hair short (her previous position paid £48 a year). This is only one of many peculiar provisos to which she must agree. The employer, Jephro Rucastle, seems pleasant enough, yet Miss Hunter obviously has her suspicions.
