  “His Last Bow” was meant to be the last of the Holmes stories, and is given the subtitle “An Epilogue of Sherlock Holmes”. Doyle did pen and publish a subsequent collection of stories, The Case Book of Sherlock Holmes, but all the stories in that collection “take place” a decade or more before “His Last Bow.” The story is unusual in that it is one of only a couple of Holmes stories not written in the first person; most of the Holmes’ stories, and all of the novels are written from the point of view of Dr. Watson, Holmes’ faithful companion, and a few stories are written from Holmes’ own perspective. This story, though, was written in the 3rd person, perhaps because Doyle wanted to present this story of espionage thwarted in such a way that Holmes’ entrance comes as something of a surprise, though the subtitle kind of serves as a spoiler.

  This story was first published in the Civil and Military Gazette on 11 May 1887, and collected in the first edition of Plain Tales from the Hills in 1888 and in subsequent editions of this collection.Miss Jhansi McKenna is six foot high, all yellow freckles and red hair, a formidable figure on the dance floor. She is held in great regard in the regiment, as Mulvaney explains, because of her mother, Bridget McKenna, wife of the Colour Sergeant of 'B' Company, called 'Ould Pummeloe'. Ould Pummeloe had saved many lives at the cost of her own when the regiment was stricken by cholera in a troop train, and they had never forgotten her.

This collection contains a selection of Morrison's best work, including humorous and horror stories. " A Skinful of Trouble" is the humorous tale of Mr. Dowdall, a gentleman who has invested as shareholder in a circus of dubious repute. All attempts to pursue the circus and recoup his investment are frustrated, but as his letters become more and more threatening, the circus manager writes back announcing that in the lack of funds, he will send property of the circus to the value of the sum demanded. Mr Dowdall is quite satisfied with this resolution of the dispute. Until next afternoon when a large crate is delivered containing a circus tiger, which is duly deposited on the street outside the Dowdall house in London. Dowdall's efforts to rid himself if the tiger are increasingly frantic and comical.

  Tess of the d'Urbervilles (1891) is a novel by Thomas Hardy. Tess Durbeyfield is the oldest child of John and Joan, uneducated peasants living in an impoverished rural village in Wessex, during the Long Depression of the 1870s. One day, her father is given the hint that they may have noble blood and that they are successors of a noble Norman family D'Urberville. Tess' fortune is changed after one accident and she decides to visit Mrs. D'Urberville, a rich widow who lives in the nearby town, and "claim kin". Though now considered a major nineteenth-century English novel and Hardy's masterpiece, Tess of the d'Urbervilles originally received mixed reviews because it challenged the sexual morals of late Victorian England.
