Beschreibung

A Voyage Through the World’s Magical PracticesLandscapes influence our cultural practices as much as the people who create them, and magic is no stranger to this effect. Magic is omnipresent in our world, but many people who practice don’t call it “magic.” Thanks to stigmatization, disavowal, and punishment for magical work, as well as christo-colonialism, many non-Wiccan or Pagan practices have gone unseen in the contemporary occult community. Crossed Crow Books’ first-ever anthology, The Crow’s Collection of World Magic, collects ten essays by writers and practitioners around the world about their magical practices, histories, and communities. This anthology sheds light on lively, underrepresented traditions and embraces the diversity of the magical world. Explore Kenneth Johnson’s initiation into Indigenous Mayan traditions, study Finnish runes with the tietӓjӓ and Aili Marjatta Kerttula, and learn how cabildo communities in Afro-Diasporic Cuba drew Lukumí from Yoruban practice with Oracle Hekataios. Enrich your understanding of the magical world around us through the land, history, and practitioners who have come from all walks of life before us.Authors and topics include:Kenneth Johnson: experiences in indigenous Mayan community, initiation into priesthood, and fire ritual.Nicholaj de Mattos Frisvold: An overview of Macumba.Oracle Hekataios: History of and personal experiences with Lukumi.Aili Marjatta Kerttula: Finnish magic with a focus on history, saunas, and house spirits.Rain Al-Alim: Translation of Kitāb al-Aḥjār, a piece of astrology-heavy Islamic writing on using talismans in magical stones.Katerina Sarpione: Balkan magic, with a focus on Bulgarian, including folklore, roles of healer and magician, and ways to apply to contemporary practiceFrankie Castanea: Dual faith practice in Italian-American folk magic and folk CatholicismLaura Davila: An overview of Brujeria Mexicana.Brandon Weston: Spirits, fairies, and the otherworld in Ozark folk magicP. At Terezín, many children sang for the Nazi officials and the Red Cross. They were used as propaganda tools, between 1943 and 1944, to make the world believe that Hitler had given a "paradise" to the Jews. Only around 100 of the 15,000 innocent people who passed through this transit camp survived.
Ela Stein Weissberger, deported at the age of 11, is one of the few survivors. In Hans Krása's opera Brundibár (The Bumblebee) performed at the camp, she played the role of the Cat, the rebellious animal who attacks the mustached monster in the hope of winning the war! Her poignant testimony gives voice once again to the courageous, hopeful children who left 4,500 drawings, diaries and poems at Terezín.
Like an internal road movie, the author offers a parallel narrative—she looks back on her own family history, her search for Ela, her anecdotes from the shooting of a documentary film, and she speaks up for all children targeted by hatred.

In the turbulent twilight of the Samurai era, when Japan was gripped by the Boshin War, one woman rose to embody the spirit of bushido with unparalleled courage and indomitable will. "Nakano Takeko" is an exciting historical biography that delves into the life and legacy of Nakano Takeko, the extraordinary female warrior whose name became synonymous with bravery and honor.
Born into a samurai family in the mid-19th century, Nakano Takeko was trained in the art of war from a young age, mastering the deadly naginata with a skill that rivaled her male counterparts. As Japan teetered on the edge of a new era, Takeko found herself drawn into the heart of the conflict. Rejecting the traditional roles prescribed to women of her time, she carved her own path on the battlefield, leading a group of women warriors, the Jōshitai, in a courageous stand against the imperial forces during the Battle of Aizu.
"Nakano Takeko" is more than just a biography; it is a testament to the resilience and spirit of a true warrior. It celebrates the life of a woman who defied societal norms, leaving an indelible mark on history. Her story is one of inspiration, courage, and the relentless pursuit of honor, making this book a must-read for history enthusiasts, admirers of strong female figures, and anyone captivated by the samurai legacy.
Prepare to be immersed in a tale of valor and determination that will leave you in awe of Nakano Takeko's enduring legacy.

When love asks everything of you, what do you give? In Holding Space, Deidra Jackson opens her heart in a deeply personal memoir about caring for her Vietnam veteran father. What began as helping with meals and doctor visits became a profound journey of faith, endurance, and rediscovering grace in the “long middle” between duty and love. Honest, tender, and unflinchingly human, this book is a companion for every caregiver who has ever felt invisible while holding everyone else together and every woman balancing the competing demands of motherhood, marriage, and leadership. Through moments of exhaustion and extraordinary love, Jackson reminds us that grace lives even in the hardest days and that love, in its quietest form, is still enough.

    Spanish Armada and English...

On July 12, 1588, the legendary Spanish Armada headed for the English Channel. The Spanish plan was to take this invasion, led by the Duke of Parma, to the coast of southeast England, where they would be unleashed to conquer Elizabethan England for Spain’s King Philip II and Catholic Christendom. The Armada included over 150 ships, 8,000 sailors, and 18,000 soldiers, and it boasted a firepower of 1,500 brass guns and 1,000 iron guns. Just leaving port itself took the entire Armada two days.
As everyone who has been taught history now knows, the Armada was one of the most famous military debacles in history. Regardless of the debate over whether it was simple mathematical miscalculation or plain bad luck, coupled with English fire ships assailing the Spanish ships, the Armada was decisively defeated. The Armada ultimately found its reluctant way home in awful conditions, having permanently lost over a third of the ships, and on the Irish coast, the Armada suffered further losses.
What has since been overlooked is that the undeclared Anglo-Spanish War continued, and it would do so until 1604. The English and their Dutch allies responded to the spectacular and unexpected defeat of the Armada with an attempt of their own to attack Spain with a fleet often called the "Counter Armada" in English. In 1589, once the impact of the previous year upon the Hapsburg naval power became clear, Elizabeth ordered Drake to gather the English fleet to take advantage of the situation. Unlike the Spanish, the English had no illusions of being able to invade their opponent's homelands and overthrow their state; instead, the English had far more modest goals. The English wanted to seek out the remainder of the Spanish fleet and burn it, land troops in Portugal and raise a revolution in that country, and capture the Azores Islands. If possible, they would use a base in the Azores to capture the anticipated treasure fleet from the New World.
