Clinical medicine is the foundation of healthcare, encompassing the diagnosis, treatment, and management of diseases and medical conditions. It involves direct interaction with patients, applying medical knowledge, and using diagnostic tools to provide appropriate care. Physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals rely on clinical medicine to bridge the gap between theoretical science and real-world patient care.
One of the primary objectives of clinical medicine is to assess and diagnose illnesses based on a combination of patient history, physical examination, and diagnostic tests. This systematic approach enables healthcare providers to determine the most effective treatment options while considering patient-specific factors such as age, genetics, lifestyle, and pre-existing conditions. The process of diagnosis is both an art and a science, requiring not only medical expertise but also strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Treatment in clinical medicine varies depending on the condition and severity of the illness. It may involve pharmacological interventions, surgical procedures, lifestyle modifications, or a combination of these. In addition to treating diseases, clinical medicine emphasizes preventive care, aiming to reduce the risk of illness through vaccinations, screenings, and patient education. The shift toward preventive medicine has proven to be an essential strategy in reducing healthcare costs and improving overall public health.

How do you apply game theory to select who should be on your Christmas shopping list? What equations should you use to decorate the Christmas tree? Will calculations show Santa is getting steadily thinner—shimmying up and down chimneys for a whole night—or fatter—as he munches on cookies and milk in billions of houses across the world? In The Indisputable Existence of Santa Claus, distinguished mathematicians Hannah Fry and Thomas Oléron Evans demonstrate, with eminent clarity, how applied mathematics are so thoroughly interwoven throughout our everyday lives by explaining mathematical concepts through one very merry motif: Christmas. In their quest to provide mathematical proof for the existence of Santa, the authors take listeners on a festive journey through a traditional holiday season, wherein every activity, from wrapping presents to playing board games to cooking the perfect turkey, is painstakingly and hilariously analyzed. Because who hasn't always wondered how to set up a mathematically perfect Secret Santa?Lighthearted and diverting with Christmasy equations, Markov chains, and matrices, The Indisputable Existence of Santa Claus brightens up the bleak midwinter with a stockingful of mathematical marvels.

How do artificial neural networks and other forms of artificial intelligence interfere with methods and practices in the sciences? Which interdisciplinary epistemological challenges arise when we think about the use of AI beyond its dependency on big data? Not only the natural sciences, but also the social sciences and the humanities seem to be increasingly affected by current approaches of subsymbolic AI, which master problems of quality (fuzziness, uncertainty) in a hitherto unknown way. But what are the conditions, implications, and effects of these (potential) epistemic transformations and how must research on AI be configured to address them adequately?

For the Maya, astronomy was not a purely scientific pursuit but intimately linked to religious, mythological, and ideological elements that were of the highest importance. The celestial realm held a sacred nature, as did the many gods and goddesses that dwelt there, so for all Mesoamerican cultures, astronomy was a fundamental part of their everyday lives. Thus, astronomy was present in their calendars, religion, and even agriculture, and in close relation to astronomy, the concept of time was also an essential part of their worldview.
The Aztec recorded many of the astronomical events they observed in codices and hieroglyphic inscriptions, but the main evidence of their deep astronomical knowledge comes from their calendar system. This information was then used to plan the orientation of buildings and ceremonial centers, which were aligned to sunrises or sunsets corresponding to special dates, such as solstices or equinoxes. Observational calendars were also used to schedule agricultural activities, as well as rituals, festivals, and celebrations.
Though the Spanish physically conquered them in quick fashion, the culture and legacy of the Inca Empire has continued to endure throughout the centuries in both Europe and South America, due in no small part to the fact they were one of the most advanced and sophisticated cultures on the continent. The sun was the main element present in the Inca worldview, so Inti, the sun god, was worshipped above all others and, even though the different parts of the empire were allowed to practice their individual beliefs, they were encouraged to venerate the sun. The connection with the sun even extended to their kings since they were considered to be the sons of the sun. Naturally, this meant astronomy was a key component of the Incas’ beliefs, and in addition to the sun, the Inca observed the moon, stars, constellations, and some planets, all of which became integral parts of their cosmology.

Sigmund Freud’s life bridged the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and his reputation and influence have endured, even intensified, in the twenty-first. Often referred to as “the father of psychoanalysis,” Freud did, in fact, conceive of many of its defining characteristics: he was the original advocate of the “talking cure,” and discovered--or, some argue, invented--the human unconscious.
Kramer’s take on Freud is at once critical and sympathetic: he recognizes what is archaic in Freud’s work and also what endures, interpreting him as not only a pioneer, but a writer whose work will survive among the classics of our literature.
