He enjoyed listening to the banter between the customers and his dad. Then tragedy struck. Shortly after his thirteenth birthday his mother died of the flu. She was the centre of the family, the rock that the man and the boy depended on. His father spent many days in bed unable to cope with the loss of his wife. At fifteen, Tim took over the stall determined to wipe out the debt that had accumulated and then to build a successful business, which would protect those he loved. Looking back he felt a had not done too badly. His clever, beautiful wife Sophie had contributed an enormous amount to the business. Initially Tim had met a fire storm of resistance from her upper-middle-class parents when he had asked to marry her. Now his and Sophie’s children were making their mark. He was excited by the influx of other young people bringing their new skills, drives and enthusiasms to the task. Many of the old guard had postponed their retirement and stayed on enjoying the job and the camaraderie one of whom was Tim’s father. In the restless heart of Austin, Texas, where suffocating heat darkly complements the stifling societal pressures of 2034, 23-year-old Rose Rulapaugh fights life's harsh realities with the only defense she has left - snarky cynicism.
Shattered dreams and lethargy line her path: a high school pregnancy ending in tragedy; a promising education never pursued. Five years, languishing on the couch, perusing socials.
Her burdens are quickly multiplying. Mom's medical condition is deteriorating. Younger brother Jack is tripping down Dad's path of irresponsibility. With this cascade of pressures, Rose wonders if her alien dream visits are a sign of eroding mental stability.
Then a hurricane sets off local tornados, destroying the family's duplex and swamping Austin with coastal immigrants. Forced to find shelter, luck finally befalls her in a chance run-in with Tyren, a genetic engineering postdoc working a secret project. He offers lodging and promises to help Rose achieve her dream of resurrecting an ancient Shasta Ground Sloth.
But every silver lining has its clouds, right? Dr. Amy Lee, Tyren's boss, grants Rose a no-questions-asked job at her genetics company, then thrashes the girl mercilessly for potentially catastrophic errors.
More clouds? Despite venting five years of pent-up anger in Tyren's willing ear, they're growing closer. Given her bloody history with the state's punitive laws, however, a 'normal' relationship will never be possible.
Troubles heaped on troubles? If it wasn't for that gnawing discomfort of avoidance, it might be easier to forget this new life and return to the couch.

When making it to congress means faking a marriage . . . fake it 'til you make it takes on a whole new meaning.

Apparently, conservative Midwestern voters want more than my brains, connections, and good looks to vote me in as a congressman.

That's right, to appear as the all-American family man they want . . . I need a wife. ASAP.

The lovely Odette Hastings seems to fit the bill. She's a wholesome small-town girl, and conveniently in need of cash. I'll give her the money to take care of her elderly parents, and she'll be the political arm candy I need.

    We both win, right?

The only problem is Odette is a little too beautiful, a little too intelligent, and way too distracting.

I have to keep my eye on the prize. Because there might be something I want more than a seat in congress.

Reclusive magazine exec Ethan Talley is furious when his business partner hires a photographer—a gorgeous photographer who insists on speaking her mind—to take pictures for an upcoming article. No matter how badly he wants the woman . . . under him, over him, against the nearest wall . . . he has reasons for not wanting to be on camera anymore, and his scars are only one of them.

It takes approximately two seconds for Lissa Kingsman to recognize Ethan as the popular YouTube gamer who fell off the planet years ago. But this Ethan is different than the charming man she used to watch, and the crush she had on him then is nothing compared to the way she's lusting after the brooding man he is today. If sex is all he can give her, fine. Why not use that bearskin rug in her studio for something other than a prop? But she's determined to put a chink in his armor, no matter how much he resists.

Jack Pilton continues to spank the ladies in the village of Little Trumpington, but he has fallen for Mary. A new group member, Jenny, the vicar's wife, suggests that they organise a stall at the village fete and offer spankings to any adult at a pound a smack, two pounds if it is on their knickers. There would be no bare-bottom spankings at the fete, or so they thought. Jack needs to find someone to help with the spankings so he asks Terry’s mother, Mrs Grant, who turns out to be an excellent spanker. Finally, Jack proposes to Mary after the fete and she accepts.
