Beschreibung

Transportation Infrastructure explores the vital role of roads, bridges, and public transit in shaping urban environments. It argues that these networks are not merely physical structures but dynamic systems influencing urban development, economic opportunity, and social equity. The book highlights how strategic investments and innovative designs can foster economic growth and improve quality of life, addressing the architectural and technological elements involved in creating sustainable urban environments. One intriguing fact is how infrastructure projects impact land use patterns, influencing where people live and work. The book's approach is to integrate architectural insights and engineering principles with social and economic considerations. It progresses through three sections, beginning with fundamental principles, then delving into the specifics of roads, bridges, and public transit—considering everything from traffic management and structural engineering to system design and accessibility. Finally, it examines the broader implications on urban development and social equity, including access to employment, education, and healthcare. It uniquely combines these elements to understand infrastructure's role as a catalyst for positive social change.

At the tender age of twenty, Jenn faces a pivotal moment when her boyfriend, Morey, proposes marriage after only a few weeks of dating. Her intuition urges her to say no, but she’s spent the entirety of her teenage years caregiving for family; she yearns for adventure, and she thinks relocating to California with Morey will give her the freedom she craves. So she says yes—only to find herself back in the caregiver role after he becomes disabled a few years into their marriage. But it’s Morey’s volatile personality that ultimately leads Jenn to make a brave decision: it’s time to leave.
Dancing on My Own Two Feet takes a poignant turn as Jenn relocates to New York City after her divorce. How can we interpret the work of contemporary artists? Focal Points is a new book series of essays, articles and reviews by acclaimed curator and critic Robert Storr. Expertly edited by art historian and curator Francesca Pietropaolo, and richly illustrated, it lends Storr’s illuminating insights into an artist’s practice and way of thinking across recent decades. Brilliantly scholarly, accessible and engaging, Focal Points offers fresh interpretations of the varied territory of modern and contemporary art. This second volume considers the work of American abstract painter Ad Reinhardt (1913–1967). Active in New York for over three decades, Reinhardt was part of the group of artists who became known as Abstract Expressionists, and he made work that would prove influential to the younger generation of Minimal and Conceptual artists. He believed in a philosophy of what he called ‘art-as-art’ and used his writing and satirical cartoons to advocate for abstract art. As he famously wrote in 1962: ‘Art is art-as-art and everything else is everything else.’ In this volume, Storr discusses Reinhardt’s painting, his comics, and his slide lecture series or ‘non-happenings, ’ as the artist called them.
