Synopsis

Shoe Footwear Evolution explores how footwear acts as a cultural artifact, reflecting design history, material innovation, and social class distinctions throughout human history. This book examines the journey of footwear from basic protection to complex expressions of identity. Early footwear, crafted from natural materials like animal hides, demonstrates ingenious adaptations to diverse environments. The book also reveals how footwear has historically signified social status, with specific styles reserved for royalty or regulated by sumptuary laws.

The narrative traces the evolution of footwear, highlighting the interplay between new materials and design. The development of tanning processes and the introduction of stitching methods mark significant advancements. The book progresses chronologically and thematically, starting with early footwear traditions. Later chapters focus on specific periods and regions, culminating in an analysis of contemporary trends and the future of footwear design.

The classical era of Japan was defined by a rich interplay of art, power, and evolving traditions, spanning the Nara, Heian, and Kamakura periods. The Nara Period saw the establishment of Japan’s first permanent capital, heavily influenced by Chinese culture, with Buddhism gaining prominence and shaping religious and artistic developments.
The Heian Period marked the height of imperial court culture, where poetry, literature, and refined aesthetics flourished under the rule of aristocratic families like the Fujiwara. It was also during this time that the kana writing system emerged, giving rise to literary masterpieces such as The Tale of Genji. As courtly elegance gave way to the rise of the samurai, the Kamakura Shogunate ushered in a new era of warrior rule, led by the Minamoto clan.
The establishment of a military government transformed Japan’s political landscape, laying the groundwork for feudal society while facing external threats like the Mongol invasions. These three periods together shaped Japan’s cultural and political identity, leaving an enduring legacy that continues to influence the nation today.

Woven Tapestry is an in-depth practical guide to the technique of this unique art form, and to finding creative expression within it.
Progressive exercises based on the authors' combined 50 years' experience are used to explain technique from making a first sample through to finished pieces. These are illustrated by over 400 specially woven samples and diagrams. The underlying principles are outlined and applied in a contemporary and creative way. Full-page images illustrate the qualities of line, colour, pattern and texture unique to woven tapestry, and the rich and exciting range of yarns available. Exercises in making and interpreting designs guide the developing weaver towards making individually creative work. Woven Tapestry offers the reader the technical skills and understanding needed to make expressive and beautiful work of their own. By working with several weft threads simultaneously, tapestry weaving becomes highly nuanced and is capable of complex imagery. Exercises in design show how to make use of the unique qualities that woven tapestry has to offer. The initial techniques are fundamentally simple and are clearly explained using only basic equipment and readily available yarns. The reader is encouraged to take time in learning, and to look closely whilst working. The continuous slow under over rhythm of weft passing through warp can promote a mental space in which to think and feel more deeply, and ultimately to create.
Right from the first exercise there are creative choices to be made. By progressing to more advanced techniques, and working with many types and combinations of yarns, the expressive freedom available to the developing weaver soon becomes endless.
