Synopsis

Pyramids Beyond Egypt explores the fascinating world of pyramidal architecture beyond the well-known Egyptian examples. Challenging the conventional Eurocentric view, the book reveals that pyramids, in various forms, exist across continents, reflecting diverse cultures and sophisticated construction techniques. These structures were not just tombs; they served religious, political, and astronomical purposes, demonstrating a shared human impulse to create lasting legacies. For instance, Mesoamerican pyramids, like those at Teotihuacan, held immense religious significance, while Southeast Asian step pyramids integrated astronomical alignments. The book progresses by first introducing global pyramidal architecture, then diving into specific examples such as those in Mesoamerica and Southeast Asia, and concluding with an analysis of construction methods. By examining archaeological findings, architectural analyses, and historical accounts, the book offers a comparative analysis of pyramid construction, highlighting both common themes and unique regional variations. This interdisciplinary approach, incorporating archaeology, anthropology, and art history, provides a comprehensive understanding of these ancient monuments and their cultural significance. It emphasizes that pyramidal architecture is a global phenomenon, reflecting humanity's diverse expressions of power, spirituality, and enduring cultural values.

    Uncertain Allies - General...

Uncertain Allies looks at the United States military's experience in the China-Burma-India (CBI) theater during World War II through the eyes of Joseph Stilwell, the commanding general of American forces in those three countries. Historian Eric Setzekorn focuses on two themes: uncertain allies and ambiguous missions.

Despite being allies, relationships between the Americans and Chinese, as well as Americans and the British, were marked by a lack of trust in the CBI theater. This was problematic because most combat personnel under Stilwell's command were Chinese. The lack of trust impacted tactical and operational planning. The second reoccurring theme, ambiguous missions, refers to the poorly defined goals for the theater. The CBI's mission was vague, and Stilwell lacked clear objectives.

Underlying both themes is the key flaw in Stilwell's conduct: a failure to understand the American political context. Stilwell advocated for a transactional military and political relationship despite indications that President Roosevelt, other leaders, and the American public desired a long-term cooperative relationship. Stilwell's proposals to make military aid and American support on a quid pro quo basis inevitably ran into staunch opposition. The result was a dangerous disconnect between American military operations and national policy.

South America’s Economy delves into the dramatic rises, falls, and reinventions of four major economies: Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, and Venezuela. This 4-in-1 collection offers a sweeping view of a continent shaped by political upheaval, resource wealth, policy experiments, and the constant push-pull between growth and crisis. From hyperinflation to privatization, oil booms to currency collapses, this volume captures the complexity and volatility of the region’s economic story.
Argentina’s economic crises highlight the consequences of policy missteps and external shocks, revealing how a once-thriving nation became a case study in recurring collapse. Brazil’s economic evolution shows a journey through industrialization, reform, and global integration, alongside persistent inequality and corruption. Colombia’s transformation tells a story of resilience—rising from the shadows of conflict to emerge as a growing economy with expanding global ties. Finally, Venezuela presents perhaps the most extreme example of economic meltdown in recent memory, offering crucial lessons about dependency, mismanagement, and populism.
Whether you’re a student, global observer, or simply curious about South America’s economic puzzle, this book provides both historical depth and modern relevance to help you understand the region's shifting fortunes.

An award-winning conflict consultant offers a new path to take when agreement and collaboration seem impossible, and teaches us that when conflict resolution fails, we can achieve freedom instead—even without others’ cooperation.
A founding CEO and his top salesperson are engaged in a heated clash over her compensation package.
A mother and daughter are locked in a nasty cycle of blame and attack.
A high-profile executive team is struggling with aggressive political infighting.
In all these cases, every effort to talk it out has been unsuccessful.
Where can you turn when your attempts to resolve conflict fail? Most approaches emphasize collaboration. You are supposed to sit down, calmly talk through your differences, and find a solution. But what if nothing seems to work, no matter what you do?
When situations resist resolution, the Optimal Outcomes Method teaches us conflict freedom.
This innovative method, based on Dr. Jennifer Goldman-Wetzler’s training at the Program on Negotiation at Harvard Law School, two decades as a consultant to Fortune 500 and high-growth CEOs and senior teams, grassroots work with Middle East leaders, US government-funded research on terrorism, and her popular course at Columbia University, Optimal Outcomes reveals eight groundbreaking practices proven to help people everywhere free themselves from conflict.
With inspiring stories from clients, students, and Dr. Goldman-Wetzler’s own life lighting the way, you’ll learn to observe complex situations with clarity, access your shadow values (things you really care about but have been unwilling to admit), and take bold, simple, surprising action.
Optimal Outcomes blends mindfulness, Jungian psychology, and practical, step-by-step advice to free anyone from seemingly impossible conflict. Applying the practices, you’ll reach your Optimal Outcome—which may be vastly different from what you originally imagined, but more satisfying than you ever dreamed possible.

Picture this: France in the 1700s, with all its kings and queens, and the Age of Enlightenment brewing like a fresh pot of coffee.
It was a time of big ideas and even bigger hair, when people like Voltaire and Rousseau were changing the way folks thought about, well, everything. And then there's the French Revolution, that wild and crazy period when people decided they'd had enough of the aristocracy and started chopping heads left and right.
But that's not all. This book will also take you on a whirlwind tour of the Napoleon Era, where you'll get up close and personal with the little general who almost conquered the world – if only the Russians hadn't been so darn cold. You'll learn about his rise and fall, his brilliant strategies, and his complicated love life, all told in a way that'll make you feel like you're right there in the thick of things.
This is the kind of book that sneaks up on you, like that kid in class who never says much but always has the best stories to tell.
It's a book that'll make you forget about all those other history books that never quite lived up to their promises.
So why not give it a try? You might just find yourself getting lost in the pages, eager to uncover the secrets and stories of a time and place that'll never be quite the same again.
