Beschreibung

Micro Roads explores a groundbreaking shift in architecture and urban planning: self-repairing road infrastructure. It highlights the potential of integrating technology like self-healing materials and micro-robotics to address the challenges of aging road infrastructure. Imagine roads that autonomously mend cracks using polymer asphalt infused with self-healing agents, or micro-robotic systems that detect and repair damage before it escalates. This approach promises to minimize disruptions, reduce maintenance costs, and create more sustainable urban environments.

The book begins by examining the limitations of current road construction and maintenance techniques. It then transitions into a detailed exploration of the science behind self-healing materials, including nanotechnology, and the engineering aspects of micro-robotic systems. Micro Roads delves into the ethical considerations and potential risks associated with deploying autonomous systems. It presents data on the cost-effectiveness and environmental impact of these technologies, making it a valuable resource for architects, engineers, urban planners, and anyone interested in the future of sustainable infrastructure.

A collection of poetry selected and performed by Bob Gonzalez, rhapsode. Rhapsodes of Ancient Greece were “song-stitchers,” performing selections from the epics of Homer and Hesiod. The contemporary rhapsode performs the classical poetry of his or her language, culture, and tradition. Any particular collection and arrangement of poems for performance I term a “rhapsody.” In general terms, a rhapsody is an ecstatic expression of feeling and enthusiasm. In music, a rhapsody is an instrumental composition irregular in form and suggestive of improvisation. The poems in this rhapsody comprise a number of poems that I have performed in public and known for much of my life as well as several recent additions to my repertory. They are arranged in chronological order from the 16th century to the early 20th century. Some of the poets represented here are Edmund Spenser, William Shakespeare, John Donne, John Milton, Alexander Pope, William Blake, William Wordsworth, John Keats, Alfred Tennyson, Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson, Lewis Carroll, and Robert Frost. 'Fascinating and lyrical . . . A beautifully written celebration of a lifelong passion' – Stephen Venables
The relationship of people with hills and mountains has been complex, rich and varied – from awe and wonder to fear and loathing, from spiritual longing to peaceful acceptance.
As he explores our high places, Ian Crofton conjures up those who have been there before: Neolithic axe-makers, mass trespassers, shepherds, quarrymen, botanists, poets and pioneering cragsmen and women among them. At the same time, he is ever attuned to the present moment – a flash of bright moss in a bog, the swoop of an eagle above a skyline, a winter sun sinking into a sea of cloud.
Following an arc from the gentle Downs of southern England to the wild peaks of Scotland's far north, Upland combines personal experiences with a keen curiosity about the history and nature of mountain landscapes, and the people who once worked and wandered among them. The result is a meditation on the enduring yet ever-changing hills, on the transience of human experience, and on the shifts and twists of time itself.

In October 2016, driven by a keen interest in emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, 3D printing, regenerative medicine, Bitcoin, and blockchain, Richard embarked on a journey to unravel the mysteries of these fields. This passion culminated in the creation of the Future Tech Podcast. From the beginning, his goal was to find geniuses—the top 1% in their field who are almost impossible to reach from the outside.
Following a significant health crisis in 2017, Richard shifted his focus to health, medicine, and bioscience issues that impact us all, and the Finding Genius Podcast was born. His growing commitment to fostering understanding and innovation led him to establish the Finding Genius Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit supporting revolutionary research initiatives.
Driven by a mission to unearth transformative insights in the science of health and wellness, the foundation aims to make these insights accessible to everyday individuals who stand to benefit the most. This audiobook narrated by Jennifer Woodward provides the first comprehensive account of menopause from prehistory to today

Are the ways we look at menopause all wrong? Historian Susan Mattern says yes, and The Slow Moon Climbs reveals just how wrong we have been. Taking readers from the rainforests of Paraguay to the streets of Tokyo, Mattern draws on historical, scientific, and cultural research to reveal how our perceptions of menopause developed from prehistory to today. For most of human history, people had no word for menopause and did not view it as a medical condition. Rather, in traditional foraging and agrarian societies, it was a transition to another important life stage. This book, then, introduces new ways of understanding life beyond fertility.

Mattern examines the fascinating "Grandmother Hypothesis"—which argues for the importance of elders in the rearing of future generations—as well as other evolutionary theories that have generated surprising insights about menopause and the place of older people in society. She looks at agricultural communities where households relied on postreproductive women for the family's survival. And she explores the emergence of menopause as a medical condition in the Western world. It was only around 1700 that people began to see menopause as a dangerous pathological disorder linked to upsetting symptoms that rendered women weak and vulnerable. Mattern argues that menopause was another syndrome, like hysterical suffocation or melancholia, that emerged or reemerged in early modern Europe in tandem with the rise of a professional medical class.
The Slow Moon Climbs casts menopause, at last, in the positive light it deserves—not only as an essential life stage, but also as a key factor in the history of human flourishing.
