Synopsis

Global Fashion Capitals explores the multifaceted elements that elevate cities to the status of international fashion hubs. The book argues that becoming a fashion capital involves more than just designer presence; it requires a blend of historical context, industrial infrastructure, artistic movements, and strategic marketing. For instance, while Paris established its legacy through haute couture, Milan excelled in textile production and ready-to-wear.

The book examines the unique journeys of Paris, Milan, and New York, dissecting how each city developed its distinct identity and global influence. Beginning with a framework for understanding the key indicators of a fashion capital, it delves into each city's fashion history, highlighting critical periods of growth and change. By using archival materials, industry reports, and other diverse sources, the book offers a comprehensive look at how these cities became epicenters of design, commerce, and cultural identity.

Concluding with a comparative analysis and a look toward the future, Global Fashion Capitals considers the rise of new global fashion centers and the evolving dynamics of the fashion industry. This approach offers readers insights applicable to understanding current and emerging fashion hubs, making it valuable for students, industry professionals, and anyone interested in urban culture and global trends.

Today, Babylon has become a byword for greed, excess, and licentiousness, mostly due to its mention in the Bible, but a closer examination reveals that Babylon was so much more, and even perhaps the most important city in the ancient world. Ancient Babylon was home to great dynasties that produced some of the world’s most influential leaders, most notably Hammurabi and Nebuchadnezzar, and these rulers invoked their wills on the entire ancient Near East and have been remembered as both progressive and cruel all at the same time. Babylon was also the seat of culture in ancient Mesopotamia and the place where scholars made amazing scientific advances that would not be eclipsed for several centuries. Babylon was also instrumental in the development of the region’s religions, and naturally, Westerners have been fascinated by the close connections between some of the Mesopotamian religious texts, which include a flood story, a creation story and a story of the righteous sufferer, and their parallels in the Hebrew Bible.
The Chaldeans were among the last of the native Mesopotamian peoples to rule ancient Babylon. Before them, Akkadians, Kassites, Assyrians, and others ruled the land situated in the middle of Mesopotamia, and before them, the Sumerians ruled southern Mesopotamia and briefly most of the region in the late 3rd millennium BCE. Understanding ancient Mesopotamia requires knowing studying how different city-states and ethnic groups were often vying for power, asserting themselves and their ethnic identities while simultaneously accepting core elements of Mesopotamian culture – notably language, science, religion, and historiography – as they played a role in the region’s development.
What makes the Chaldeans unique, however, is that they can be traced to the Levant. Sometime in the late 2nd millennium BCE, the Chaldeans began a trek across the region, as many people did at that time, and eventually occupied land along the Euphrates River.

Farming and ranching success comes from the freedom to fail because there is no silver bullet. Curiosity – Farmers Discovering What Works tells journeys farmers make to find solutions that are kinder to the environment, easier on the pocket and bring purpose, pride and confidence to those in the most complex profession there is. Each story has nuggets of inspiration and insight to stimulate observation and logic in farming matters.
John's perspectives are associated with the practices and principles of Allan Savory's Holistic Management, which though habits and routines, changes how farmers observe, question and probe for solutions. John teaches this in New Zealand and assists with farmers around the globe as a tutor for Holistic Management International. John draws on similarly minded farmers and experts such as Joel Salatin, Gabe Brown, Allan Nation, Allen Williams, Fred Provenza, Christine Jones, Charles Massy and others offering commercial farmers new directions and insights.
    Reviews include:
…his purposeful “short, sharp” essays are designed for busy people. “Hopefully it’s style will remind you of Allan Nation.” Yes, John King did indeed capture Allan’s wise pithiness. I found myself underlining or circling something in virtually every essay. It’s dense, packed with sensible advice gleaned from dozens of on-farm experiments over numerous decades. Joel Salatin, editor, Stockman Grass Farmer, Missouri, USA
This invaluable and important book should be compulsory reading for anyone daring to manage farming landscapes with an eye to contributing to healthier farmscapes and catchments, rural families and their animals, and to a sustainable future. How I wish I could have read and lived in such a book as this when I was a young farmer preparing to make all the mistakes. A farming, social, and environmental gem. Charles Massy, author, Call of the Reed Warbler

Learn more about the history of those countries. The topics addressed will be the following:
The Khmer Empire--Historians describe Cambodia as the Khmer State or the Angkorian Empire (Khmer:) from the 9th century to the 15th century, when it was a Hindu/Buddhist empire in Southeast Asia. The empire, which developed from the old societies of Funan and Chenla, governed and/or "vassalized" the majority of mainland Southeast Asia and parts of Southern China, covering from the suggestion of the Indochinese Peninsula northward to modern-day Yunnan province in China, and from Vietnam westward to Myanmar. The Khmer Empire was greater at its peak than the Byzantine Empire (Eastern Roman Empire) that existed at the exact same period.
The Siamese-- Siam was just a much different name for what's now referred to as Thailand. The Siamese are the people who live there, though they're never ever called as such any longer.
Thailand is a fascinating country, with its own culinary arts, culture, history, royalty, infrastructure, and influence on the world. To learn more about these “Thai” people before they were called Thai, when they were Siamese, is to learn about those people’s roots.

The Antichrist by Friedrich Nietzsche is an influential philosophical work which explores the metaphysical implications of Atheism and moral nihilism. Nietzsche's exploration of the potential implications of atheism leads him to conclude that, without the traditional basis provided by God, morality becomes an arbitrary set of conventions derived from human opinion. This approach undermines the Judeo-Christian conception of morality as divinely ordained and encourages readers to consider alternative systems of ethics and value. Read in English, unabridged.
