Originally written as a series of newspaper articles in 1847, Wage-Labor and Capital were intended to give an overview of Marx’s central theories regarding the economic relationships between workers and capitalists. These theories outlined include the Marxian form of the Labour Theory of Value, which distinguishes “labor” from “labor-power”, and the Theory of Concentration of Capital, which states that capitalism tends towards the creation of monopolies and the disenfranchisement of the middle and working classes. These theories were later elaborated in Volume 1 of Capital, published in 1867. Karl Heinrich Marx FRSA was a German philosopher, a critic of political economy, economist, historian, sociologist, political theorist, journalist, and socialist revolutionary. His best-known titles are the 1848 pamphlet The Communist Manifesto and the four-volume Das Kapital.

In this luminous essay, Thoreau calls us to reconsider how we view the past: not as a rigid ledger of facts, but as a shifting landscape of light and shadow. He asks us to read history “as little critically as we consider the landscape, and be more interested by the atmospheric tints … than by its groundwork and composition.”
From the twilight of ages to the dawn of our own perception, this work invites you to sit on the mound of time, gaze through the mist of memory, and recognise that the true monument is not the stone carved in antiquity, but the living moment we inhabit now. Listen as Fiona Spreadborough gives voice to this meditation on existence, memory and the eternal laws of light.
Ideal for listeners drawn to thoughtful reflection, transcendental inquiry, and the subtle beauty of ideas.

"Hettes' writing verges on the poetic as she describes the heartbreaking fear that her suffering is permanent . . . the memoir includes moments of humor and hope, and it is inspiring to chart Hettes' journey from despair to a degree in "self-studies." A moving recollection filled with wisdom and unabashed emotion." - Kirkus Reviews
"This is a book for everyone who toys with walling themselves off to live with loneliness." - Betsy Teter, founder of Hub City Press
"It's easy enough to label child sexual abuse as horrific, but the acts themselves are only part of the problem. Hettes reveals the crushing, long-term consequences of sexual violation and our culture's collective failure to address it." - Sheri Reynolds, NYT bestselling author of The Rapture of Cannan
Stacey is living exactly the right life before she hits the psychological equivalent of a patch of black ice.
As Professor Hettes, her classes focus as much on neuroscience's beauty and wonder as its facts and theories. Fellow faculty members see her as a fair but outspoken leader on a campus steeped in the blended patriarchies of academia and southern gentility.
At an emotionally charged forum on sexual violence, she takes a stand against a colleague's reckless verbal assault, outing herself as a sexual abuse survivor in the process. Professor Hettes must continue her work even as Stacey finds herself resubmerged in the sights, sounds, and smells of her memories with Mr. Jay, a Pentecostal church deacon.
With exceptional candor, Dispatches from the Couch invites readers to take a seat beside her in the office of her new therapist, Piper. This debut memoir reveals the laborious, complex, but promising work of revisiting the past in order to extract its remnants of shame and loneliness from the present.

John Steele left his family and home at the tender age of 16 to join the Royal Navy. In a select branch of only 200 he subsequently qualified as the youngest Clearance Diver at that time. He then moved on to a life as a commercial oilfield diver and for 22 years worked in the unforgiving depths of the North Sea and Persian Gulf. In 2004 a new industry was opening up. After an intense re-education he secured a job with one of the largest private security companies working with the reconstruction of Iraq. This involved explosive and gunshot filled daily runs deep into the heart of the Mosul and Baghdad red zones at the height of the post war troubles.
Security tasks followed in Africa involving Anti-Piracy duties aboard ships off the dangerous Somali coastline. An advisory position was then offered in the Swamp Area around Brass Island in Bayelsa State working with the Nigerian military’s Joint Task Force.
He now has a gold prospecting operation 230km above the Arctic Circle in a beautiful but wild part of Finland. He successfully obtained his own gold claim in 2019 which was aptly named “Kaikki Peliin”, or in English, “ALL IN”.
As I U-turned, my wheels slipped off the tarmac into the gooey mud and the vehicle hesitated. I slipped into four-wheel drive and gassed it. My vehicle took the brunt of incoming PKM light machine gun and AK47 fire from insurgents hidden in the fruit and veg stand and sand berms. The rounds impacting the vehicle’s armour sounded like sledgehammers and eventually at least one found a weak spot and entered the engine bay. I could feel the engine dying as I desperately tried to move away from the junction. A few seconds later I ended up facing away from the contact point with a dead engine stuck in first gear. I was holding the key down and chugging up the road with flat tyres and moving on the batteries and starter motor!
We came to a grinding halt in the middle of the kill zone…
