  The Jacobites conjure up many images to 21st century Britons, including romantic heroism, the Outlander series, and Bonnie Prince Charlie as the doomed hero of the cause, but Jacobitism was a cause that had far reaching consequences across 18th century Europe. The Jacobites were not only supporters of the exiled Stuart monarchy, but also against the political and religious settlements agreed to across the British Isles. As Jacobite historians such as Daniel Szechi and Frank McLynn have noted, the specter of the Jacobite threat was present for the British government and monarchy in their dealings with European powers throughout the 18th century. This was especially true in France, the country that supported the exiled Stuarts and gave them a home until 1714. This soured the French monarchy’s relationship with Britain, and the Hanoverian kings who replaced the Stuarts were always aware of it. 
  Of all the fighting conducted by the Jacobites, the Battle of Culloden, fought on April 16, 1746, was probably the most famous battle of them all, and it was a complete disaster for the Jacobite army. The government army outnumbered and outgunned the Jacobites, and when snow fell that morning, it left the battlefield wet and boggy. The exposed field also meant there would be nowhere for the Jacobites to avoid the enemy’s gunfire. The battle began around 1:00 p.m. with British artillery fire that the Jacobites struggled to respond against, and the famous Highland charge employed by the Scottish clans was hopeless in a boggy field. Their opposition had learned from previous encounters by attacking their opponent on the right instead of straight ahead, which bypassed the Highlanders’ shield. The battle lasted about an hour, and in that time the Jacobites lost about 2,000 men, a resounding defeat that marked the end of the Jacobites’ struggle to restore a Stuart to the throne.

  Land is one of the most emotive and symbolically powerful issues in Africa. In rural contexts, the collision of history, class, race, gender, time and space has made meaningful efforts to overcome economic inequality complex. In South Africa, the end of slavery and its subsequent creation of 'buffer communities' for military purposes in the 1850s all collided with the stalled emergence of a relatively self-sufficient Black peasantry. The dismantling of this Black agrarian class in the twentieth century involved the incubation of white producers and their favourable positioning within product markets. In a programme of statecraft, that explains our country's prevalent inequality and widespread economic inactivity.
  'New' Settler or 'Old' Tenant? explores how this past continues to shape the present. Using a rich body of archival, news, census, legal and primary sources spanning almost two centuries, the book traces the construction and reproduction of racial hierarchies in land, labour and product markets. Across the rural Eastern Cape – from the lands between the Fish and Keiskamma rivers moving further north towards Kat River Valley, Sada (Whittlesea) and the Glen Grey area – this journey reveals the origin stories of enduring rural economic conflicts and the heavy and tormenting legacy these struggles impose on the present.
  From the agrarian reforms of the 1830s, designed to secure labour after the end of slavery, to the failed Ciskeian experiments to 'remake' a Black commercial agrarian class as a 'buffer community', and the mass resettlement of people into marginal lands, this book follows the long arc of history.   The story of the ancient Israelites in Egypt is one of the most famous stories in the world, and one of the most contentious from a historical standpoint. Today, most people know about the relationship between the ancient Israelites and the Egyptians from the Old Testament book of Exodus, and the numerous feature films that often depict the dealings between the two peoples in contentious ways.  
  Eventually, the separate Hebrew tribes united together as a type of confederation, allies who made a treaty (covenant) to provide military aid for one another when threatened by an enemy state. But it was only under the charismatic leadership of David that the 12 tribes united into a single political entity. Scholars refer to the period encompassing the reign of David and his son Solomon as the United Monarchy.  
  As important as the kingdom of Israel was for several hundred years, its lifespan was limited by its size, which was determined by its location. The Israelites were located among several different peoples, many of whom were closely related, constantly struggled with them to acquire more land, and fought to keep what they had. Eventually, larger and more powerful kingdoms – such as Egypt, Assyria, and Babylon – were too much for the Israelites to resist, as their armies were too large, and the geopolitical games the Israelites once successfully used were eventually used against them.  
  Jerusalem was uninhabited for much of the 6th century B.C. This period is known as the exile to Babylon, and Bible scholars believe that it was during those years that the Jewish people came into contact with several stories and legends that would later be incorporated into their sacred writings. A generation later, Achaemenid Persian Emperor Cyrus the Great allowed the Jews who so wished to return to Jerusalem to rebuild the temple and reestablish their nation.

  In today’s world we live in a culture of truth suppression. This is true in representative democracies like the United States as well as full totalitarian dictatorships like Communist China. 
  This book covers many areas of major lies like Global Warming, perverted doctrines taught in schools, Politics, News Suppression, Communist China, limitations in Spirituality, deficit spending, and problems with globalism. 
  There are many different types of truth suppression and as much as we would like to think that we live in an advanced culture and world, this effort by different entities to suppress truth affects our lives negatively in many ways. 
  The most direct effect is that we live in fear of the future of our world which is a big lie. 
  This suppression also keeps us from fully realizing our spiritual natures and that we do have the ability to accomplish amazing things when we live with full honesty in our lives. 
  I believe that individuals are closest to a state of happiness when they live their lives in truth. (See my book “A New Paradigm of Truth and Happiness” for more information.) 
  There are actions we can take to correct this situation but they are mass actions which need many persons involved to have a real effect. A list of these actions are given later in this book.
