Brassroots Democracy recasts the birth of jazz, unearthing vibrant narratives of New Orleans musicians to reveal how early jazz was inextricably tied to the mass mobilization of freedpeople during Reconstruction and the decades that followed. Benjamin Barson presents a "music history from below," following the musicians as they built communes, performed at Civil Rights rallies, and participated in general strikes. Perhaps most importantly, Barson locates the first emancipatory revolution in the Americas—Haiti—as a nexus for cultural and political change in nineteenth-century Louisiana. In dialogue with the work of recent historians who have inverted traditional histories of Latin American and Caribbean independence by centering the influence of Haitian activists abroad, this work traces the impact of Haitian culture in New Orleans and its legacy in movements for liberation.Brassroots Democracy demonstrates how Black musicians infused participatory music practice with innovative forms of grassroots democracy. Late nineteenth-century Black brass bands and activists rehearsed these participatory models through collective performance that embodied the democratic ethos of Black Reconstruction. Termed "Brassroots Democracy," this fusion of political and musical spheres revolutionized both. Brassroots Democracy illuminates the Black Atlantic struggles that informed music-as-world-making from the Haitian Revolution through Reconstruction to the jazz revolution. The work theorizes the roots of the New Orleans brass band tradition in the social relations grown in maroon ecologies across the Americas. Their fruits contributed to the socio-sonic commons of the music we call jazz today.

Cork born Seamus Cashman is the founder of one of Ireland's leading literary and cultural publishing houses, Wolfhound Press. Previous poetry collections are: Carnival and Clowns & Acrobats. He edited two landmark anthologies for young readers, The Wolfhound Press Book of Irish Poems for Young People (1975) still in print, and Something Beginning with P: new poems from Irish poets (2004). The collapse of the Russian Empire in 1917 marked the beginning of radical change across Eastern Europe, and Ukraine found itself at the center of a volatile political landscape. The chaos of World War I, followed by the Bolshevik Revolution, dismantled centuries-old institutions, replacing them with a new, ideologically driven regime determined to reshape society.
Ukraine’s struggle for autonomy intensified during this transitional period. After the fall of the Romanovs, various Ukrainian factions attempted to establish an independent nation, but their efforts were short-lived. The Bolsheviks, intent on consolidating power, saw Ukraine not as a sovereign entity but as a key agricultural region vital to the survival and success of the Soviet state. By the early 1920s, Ukraine was forcibly incorporated into the USSR, and its political identity was subordinated to Moscow's vision of a unified socialist republic.
The Bolsheviks, led initially by Vladimir Lenin, promised land to peasants and equality for all workers, which won them temporary support. However, these promises quickly dissolved into policies that centralized power and suppressed regional identities. The Soviet leadership viewed Ukrainian nationalism as a threat to their authority, prompting efforts to erase cultural distinctions and eliminate opposition. Lenin’s New Economic Policy offered some relief and flexibility to rural communities, but this period of relative leniency ended with his death and Joseph Stalin’s rise to power.
