Synopsis

My reasons for believing that a new exposition of Vico's philosophy is required may easily be inferred from the observations on the effects of his work and the biographical notes which form respectively the second and fourth appendices to this volume. Here I merely wish to state that my exposition is not meant for a summary of Vico's writings work by work and part by part. It rather presupposes an acquaintance with these writings, and, where that is lacking, is intended to induce the reader to procure them in order to follow better and to check the interpretation and estimate of them here offered. On this supposition, though I have made free use of my author's actual words, especially in the chapters dealing with history, I have not thought it desirable to mark them as quotations except where it was important to emphasise the precise phrase of the original. I have in general combined such passages from fragments scattered over a wide field, sometimes abbreviating, sometimes amplifying, and always freely adding words and phrases of my own by way of commentary: and the continual use of quotation marks would merely have shown up in a manner more wearisome than valuable the reverse side of my embroidery, which any reader who so desires can study by the help of the references given at the end of the book. In my anxiety to show in every detail of my work, so far as I could, the veneration due to the great name of Vico, I have endeavoured to be brief with the brevity at which he himself aimed as the hall-mark of sterling scientific thought. With this in view I have refrained even from controversy with his various interpreters, and have either contented myself with mere remarks, or more often left my details to be justified by the coherence of my view as a whole. Some of the interpretations supported by me I believe to be the mature fruit of the investigations and controversies which form the greater part of the literature on Vico: all the rest, for which I am personally responsible, and the general idea of my book, I will defend against alternative and contradictory views when occasion arises, should it ever do so, in the detailed and direct manner which I have not thought it necessary to adopt in the course of my exposition. I hope, in fact, that the present work will rekindle rather than quench the discussion of Vico's philosophy: since in him we have, as Goethe calls him, the Altvater whom a nation is happy to possess, and to him we must hark back for a time in order to imbue our modern philosophy with an Italian feeling, however cosmopolitan it may be in thought. The dedication of my book, besides being a token of respect to one of the greatest modern teachers of the history of philosophy, is intended to express the expectation and hope that the gap in this history to which I have called attention more than once, especially on page 277 of the present volume, may soon be filled.

LADY KILLERS AND FEMME FATALES – STORIES OF MURDER MOST FOUL – HAVE GRIPPED PUBLIC IMAGINATION FOR CENTURIES
Early Modern Britain was awash with pamphlets, ballads, woodcuts broadcasting bloodthirsty tales of traitorous wives, greedy mistresses, cunning female poisoning lacing the supper with deadly substances; of child killers and spiteful witches, stories of women wholly and unnaturally wicked. These were printed or sung, tacked the walls of alehouses, sold in the streets for pennies and read voraciously to thrill all. But why? When the vast majority of murders then (and now) are committed by men.
In this bold, page-turning new history, former police officer and historian Blessin Adams tells stories of women whose violent crimes shattered the narrow confines of their gender – and whose notoriety revealed a society that was at once repulsed by and attracted to murderous female rebellion. Based on detailed research in court archives, each chapter explores murders that thrilled and terrified the British public; the crimes that caused the most concern and provoked the most debate. Women in this period killed rarely, and when they did it was usually within the context of extreme provocation or domestic violence. Adams has the ability of the best crime novelists in recreating the setting in which each case occurred as well as the motivations of each perpetrator.
Thou Savage Woman reminds us that women in the past had voices, that they sought to control their bodies and their environments and that they also had the capacity for committing acts of unspeakable violence.
In Thou Savage Woman, Blessin Adams delves into the dark corners of Europe's Elizabethan era, unearthing the chilling tales of notorious female criminals. This non-fiction biography is a must-read for those fascinated by the macabre and the up-coming release is already topping pre-order lists.

Through meticulous research and compelling analysis, this book unravels the insidious politicization of intelligence under Ulbricht's regime. Witness accounts clash with Stasi reports, revealing a stark disparity between the reality of East German sentiments and the distorted narrative peddled to the politburo. As labor unrest simmered beneath the surface, the regime's reliance on manipulated intelligence proved catastrophic.
The narrative climaxes with the June 17, 1953 uprising - a pivotal moment in East German history. Amidst the enthusiasm of a million citizens rising against oppression, the fragility of Ulbricht's regime is laid bare. "Over the Wall" lays bare the extent of Ulbricht's manipulation and its profound impact on the tumultuous events of 1953, offering a chilling reminder of the dangers of wielding truth as a weapon.

This book consists of the following titles:
    - Ludwig Wittgenstein: Ludwig Wittgenstein, one of the most influential philosophers of the 20th century, profoundly shaped modern thought, particularly in the realms of language, logic, and the philosophy of mind. His philosophy spans two distinct periods, marked by an evolution in his views on the relationship between language, meaning, and reality. Wittgenstein’s work challenges the way we think about and use language, positing that philosophical problems often arise from misunderstandings of language and its limitations.
    - Martha Nussbaum: Martha Nussbaum is one of the most influential philosophers of our time, particularly known for her contributions to feminist theory, political philosophy, and ethics. A professor at the University of Chicago, her work spans a wide array of topics including justice, human capabilities, human rights, and the role of emotions in moral decision-making. Nussbaum’s ideas have significantly impacted both academic philosophy and practical policy, with her innovative theories offering valuable insights into the intersection of ethics, politics, and human development.
    - Bertrand Russell: Bertrand Russell, born on May 18, 1872, in Trellech, Monmouthshire, Wales, was a British philosopher, logician, mathematician, and social critic. Coming from a prominent aristocratic family, with his grandfather, Lord John Russell, having served as a British Prime Minister, Russell had an influential upbringing. He attended Cambridge University, where he studied under Alfred North Whitehead, a notable logician and philosopher. Russell was deeply influenced by the works of Gottlob Frege and David Hilbert.
