Beschreibung

Ben Hecht's '1001 Afternoons in Chicago' is a groundbreaking collection of short stories that captures the essence of 1920s urban life in Chicago. Written in a snapshot style, each story portrays a vivid and intimate glimpse into the lives of everyday people in the bustling city. Hecht's prose is both poetic and gritty, painting a mosaic of characters and situations with sharp observation and empathy. The book is a masterpiece of modernist literature, showcasing Hecht's talents as a pioneering writer of the time. Ben Hecht, a Chicago native and renowned playwright and screenwriter, drew inspiration for '1001 Afternoons in Chicago' from his own experiences in the city. With a background in journalism, Hecht was deeply attuned to the pulse of urban life, which is reflected in the raw authenticity of his stories. His passion for storytelling and social commentary shines through in this collection, making it a timeless classic. I highly recommend '1001 Afternoons in Chicago' to readers who appreciate richly detailed narratives and evocative depictions of urban existence. There is something about the number 3.

The Ancient Greeks believed 3 was the perfect number, and in China 3 has always been a lucky number, and they know a thing or two.

Most religions also have 3 this and 3 that and, of course, in these more modern times, three’s a crowd may be too many, except when it’s a ménage à trois. It seems good things usually come in threes.

Whatever history and culture says WE think 3, a hat-trick of stories, is a great number to explore themes and literary avenues that classic authors were so adept at creating.

The Beatitudes illustrate the ways of God. With genuine faith, true Christian disciples willingly embrace what many choose not to experience out of fear, conformity, or slothfulness. And in return for their desire to magnify God’s glory in a darkened world, God blesses them with His presence, peace, comfort, and encouragement, culminating in an abundance of heavenly joy! Oh, the joy that comes from living out the Beatitudes!

Lafcadio Hearn was born on the 27th June 1850 on the Ionian isle of Levkás in Greece to a British Army officer and a Greek Mother.
His father, fearing for his career prospects at being married to a Greek Orthodox wife, sent them to Dublin whilst he continued to advance his career with further postings. Life there was difficult for mother and son. His father returned, wounded and traumatised, when Lafcadio was three. He annulled the marriage and she remarried but had to give up care of Lafcadio to her sister-in law.
After brief periods for Catholic education in England and France he emigrated to Ohio in the United States when he was 19, taking on a series of casual jobs before embarking on a career as a journalist, publishing poems and essays in Cincinnati. It was whilst here that he began a side-line in translating, starting with Gautier and Flaubert. He married in 1874 to a 20 year old African-American woman in violation of Ohio's anti-miscegenation law. The marriage soon failed.
In 1877 he relocated to New Orleans to write on a variety of themes before picking up a two year assignment from Harper’s to write in the West Indies, where he also wrote his first novel.
In 1890 Harper’s sent him to Japan. Here he left journalism and took the remarkable decision to become a schoolteacher in the north of Japan. Enraptured by the culture he was driven to explain it in various Western publications to those who had little, if any, knowledge of its culture. Within the year he had fallen in love with, and married, a high-born Japanese lady, together they would have four children.
In 1895 he became a Japanese national and took the name Koizumi Yakumo, Koizumi being his wife’s family name.
The following few years, whilst a professor of Literature at the Imperial University of Japan, were his most creative and admired period.
Lafcadio Hearn died of heart failure on the 26th of September 1904, in Tokyo, Japan shortly before leaving to deliver a series of lectures at Cornell University in New York State. He was 54.

Gianni Pasin, a successful Veneto businessman, tells the story of his adventurous life and career. It is the account of a bold, unconventional life. Pasin never wanted a permanent desk job and his horizons have always encompassed the whole world. A modern pioneer, he opened up commercial opportunities in countries as far flung as Niger and Eritrea, the Arab Emirates and Australia, Bangladesh and India, post-Mao China and Fidel Castro's Cuba, and has always viewed work as a means for exploring different cultures and immersing himself in the customs and traditions of other peoples. The idea of setting up Master Italia – a European leader in cap sales – was the masterpiece of his career, a journey that has enriched his life with fantastic experiences and great achievements. Pasin's desire to convey a message of hope to future generations has now prompted him to espouse a new cause: sustainability. The world, of which he has seen both the beauty and the darker sides, is very fragile. We all have a duty to change our lifestyle, and Master Italia, which in the meantime has passed into the hands of his nephew Alessandro Colle Tiz, is rising to Gianni Pasin's new challenge.

My Secret Life, the gargantuan erotic autobiography of a wealthy Victorian English gentleman has been described as 'the strangest book ever written'. Comprising one-hundred-and-eighty-four chapters and over one million words, the epic confessional describes in eloquent and explicit detail the exploits of a man (who refers to himself simply as 'Walter'), whose life was devoted to the pursuit of erotic adventure and carnal pleasure.

Now for the first time in the history of this infamous erotic masterpiece, film composer Dominic Crawford Collins is producing a fully scored narration of the complete unabridged text. More 'audiofilm' than audiobook, each chapter and scene has its own unique musical accompaniment, reflecting the author's changing emotional landscape and offering the listener a truly immersive erotic audio experience.
