Summary

Test of Evil (based partly on true events)

Genre: Fiction, Psychological Thriller, , Mystery, Suspense, Mental psychopathy, courtroom

Test of Evil
is based partly on real events that took place in our time, in any well-known and ordinary country and city. This is an evil and deceptive psychological thriller about the heinous and shocking primal murder of a child whose only depravity was his very existence. His dark intentions caused the murder of the child and the piling up of his intentions in front of the police who stubbornly and patiently examine and investigate to catch the perpetrator of the murder.
Test of Evil pushes readers into the social fallout resulting from the murder of seven-year-old Isaac Manis. As an investigation into his wrongful death ensues, the terrible forces of deception and manipulation challenge the virtues of truth and justice in a seemingly "upright" society.
After seven-year-old Yitzhak Manis was kidnapped from his home and murdered, Lieutenant Michael "Mickey" Holmes, a detective specializing in unsolved crimes, is assigned to investigate the case. Soon, Mickey finds himself entangled in a complex narrative woven by unknown hands. As the pressure mounts by the minute, they pin the blame on Joshua Solomon, a mysterious leader of a nearby religious cult with a long record of child abuse. Although Solomon appears to be a prime suspect, Mickey's deputy, Wally, does not seem convinced. The investigation continues as Solomon awaits trial. Meanwhile, the investigators look inward to discover the truth about young Isaac's private life. A child of a broken home, Isaac's environment is dysfunctional at best. His father, Avraham, treats him with extreme resentment. His stepfather, Gideon, sees him as nothing more than a nuisance. Suspicion begins to brew in the minds of the investigators as they uncover clues about the past lives of all the suspects. Could these revelations be the key to uncovering the truth, or are things really as they seem? Eventually, Solomon was accused of the crime. All efforts to clear his name turned out to be invalid. Just as he prepares to receive punishment, the terrifying truth is revealed. The story is told in a series of quick scenes that heighten the tension and take the reader to a tense conclusion. The Test of Evil is a novel that illustrates a clear picture of a society full of repulsive, indulgent, and psychotic characters. Perfect for lovers of intrigue, thrillers, suspense, and murder mysteries, this is a book recommended to all thriller and thriller lovers as it sheds light on the darkest and most hidden parts of polite society..

“A light-hearted, sardonic homage to the detective novel … The charm of this literary exercise comes with the self-conscious indulging of a fantasy … that we can have the thrill of adventure and risk and danger in our lives and that we would acquit ourselves well in conflict with gamblers, goons and crooked cops.”—New York Times Book Review

Meet Pete Amsterdam, the world's most reluctant sleuth.

Naked in his hot tub, Pete is idly reviewing his morning tennis game when trouble arrives in the form of the inevitable blonde. This being Key West, the blonde is not quite what she seems, and it's useless to explain to her that he's not a real detective—that, in fact, he got his PI license strictly as a tax dodge, a way to pretend his new wine cellar is an "office." She's got troubles of her own—big troubles that are utterly foreign to the cozy little paradise Pete has crafted for himself.

Why, then, does the unwilling gumshoe allow himself to be squeezed ever tighter against Key West's humid underbelly—involved with the likes of local bully Lefty Ortega, his nympho daughter, and the sleazeball who controls the island's gambling boats? And why does he feel that his life is being taken over by the demands and traditions of the detective story?

Will Pete blunder his way through to solving the crime? Will he penetrate the leotard of the lissome yoga teacher who is his only ally? The answers will be found in these fast-moving and hilarious pages, where the hard-boiled flirts with the postmodern. Think of this novel as Raymond Chandler meets Woody Allen meets the Coen brothers, and as a romp that somehow breaks through to serious consideration of the themes of community and responsibility, and the notion that maybe all of us could be heroes—even if mostly in spite of ourselves.

Cash McCall is a believer in free enterprise, a man not yet forty who buys, sells, and merges companies to make huge profits in a postwar nation of conformist "company men." McCall is an enigma who operates out of an expensive tenth-floor suite in a Philadelphia hotel that he may or may not own. He's single, conducts secret business meetings, and is both envied and hated. No one knows where he came from.

Grant Austen spent three decades building his plastics company. Now, as he seeks counsel from his banker and lawyer about selling out, he unwittingly triggers a whirlwind of corporate and financial maneuvering he doesn't fully understand. And his daughter, Lory, commits the cardinal sin of falling in love with Cash McCall, the man who's about to buy her father's company out from under him.

But who is Cash McCall? A ruthless operator or a rugged individualist? Reminiscent of Ayn Rand's The Fountainhead, this is a novel about love, the free enterprise system, and one man's refusal to be anyone but himself.

They came for his family. Now he’s coming for them.
Max Havok had the perfect life: a beautiful wife, twin daughters, and a thriving business built from scratch. He was a good man. A family man. But that’s not who he’d always been.
For twenty years, he kept the door locked on a violent past—a past where he’d learned the only justice that mattered was the kind you took for yourself.
On an ordinary Wednesday night, that locked door is blown off its hinges. A brutal home invasion destroys his world; a tragedy the police dismiss as a burglary gone wrong. But one detail cuts through the fog of loss: the strange, inconsolable grief of his next-door neighbor, a man who’d barely spoken to them before.
It doesn't add up, and when Max seeks an answer, he only uncovers more questions. Stonewalled by an investigation that feels like a cover-up, he soon discovers that his search for answers has made him the target of people with power, resources, and a network of killers at their disposal.
Unfortunately for them, Max Havok has one thing they don’t.
    Nothing left to lose…
