Beschreibung

You have never met an (ex) FBI agent like Brigid Quinn"Keeping secrets, telling lies, they require the same skill. Both become a habit, almost an addiction, that's hard to break even with the people closest to you, out of the business. For example, they say never trust a woman who tells you her age; if she can't keep that secret, she can't keep yours. I'm fifty-nine."Brigid Quinn's experiences in hunting sexual predators for the FBI have left her with memories she wishes she didn't have and lethal skills she hopes never to need again. Having been pushed into early retirement by events she thinks she's put firmly behind her, Brigid keeps telling herself she is settling down nicely in Tucson with a wonderful new husband, Carlo, and their dogs. But the past intervenes when a man named Floyd Lynch confesses to the worst unsolved case of Brigid's career—the disappearance and presumed murder of her young protégée, Jessica. Floyd knows things about that terrible night that were never made public, and offers to lead the cops to Jessica's body in return for a plea bargain. It should finally be the end of a dark chapter in Brigid's life. Except…the new FBI agent on the case, Laura Coleman, thinks the confession is fake, and Brigid finds she cannot walk away from violence and retribution after all, no matter what the cost. With a fiercely original and compelling voice, Becky Masterman's Rage Against the Dying marks the heart-stopping debut of a brilliant new thriller writer.

Another murder in town is just . . . APAWLING!

Just when Ruby finally gets her boyfriend Chief Jon Miller back, and utters the dreaded "L" word, a bank robbery steals away his chance to reply. Ruby handles the situation in her usual, inimitable style, only to find yet another distraction: Murder.

It's "Fame Over" when a reality TV starlet turns up dead in a dumpster.

Ruby has her hands full trying to juggle the many suspects and twisty clues, let alone getting Jon to 'fess up about his feelings. Of course, Ruby doesn't have to charge into the mystery alone. Her trusted feline familiar, the perpetually snarky and habitually mouthy Rumpus is on the case as well.

Ruby tangles with mobsters, celebrities, hardened criminals, hitmen, and—perhaps the most dreaded of all—the modern publishing industry as she juggles the investigation, her relationship with Jon, and the stress of being a fledgling mystery writer.

Return to Fiddler's Cove with Ruby Diamond and her cast of characters, where a cat-tastrophe is waiting around every corner and magic and mystery make for a wonderful cozy mystery series.

Because navigating middle age has never been so much fun . . . or so dangerous.

Nick Travers is back where it all began.

25 years after The Philadelphia Inquirer proclaimed Crossroad Blues “an impressive debut by a promising new talent,” the acclaimed crime novel is back.

A modern, Southern reinvention of The Maltese Falcon, Crossroad Blues won noir fans with its nod to the masters and thrilled readers with a wild ride along Highway 61. It’s here that we first meet Nick Travers, an ex–New Orleans Saint turned Tulane University blues historian. Nick searches for the lost recordings of 1930s bluesman Robert Johnson—and a missing colleague—and finds trouble at every turn.

The cast of characters includes a red-headed siren, an Elvis-worshipping hitman, Johnson’s ghost, and the Mississippi Delta itself. Crossroad Blues still sings.

Simpatía is set in the Venezuela of Nicolas Maduro amid a mass exodus of the intellectual class who have been leaving their pets behind. Ulises Kan, the protagonist and a movie buff, receives a text message from his wife, Paulina, saying she is leaving the country (and him). Two other events end up disrupting his life even further: the return of Nadine, an unrequited love from the past, and the death of his father-in-law, General Martín Ayala. Thanks to Ayala's will, Ulises discovers that he has been entrusted with a mission—to transform the great family home into a shelter for abandoned dogs. If he manages to do it in time, he will inherit the apartment that he had shared with Paulina.

This novel centers on themes of family and orphanhood in order to address the abuse of power by a patrilineage of political figures in Latin America, from Simón Bolívar to Hugo Chávez. The untranslatable title, Simpatía, which means both sympathy and charm, ironically references the qualities these political figures share. In a morally bankrupt society, where all human ties seem to have dissolved, Ulises is like a stray dog picking up scraps of sympathy. Can you really know who you love? What is, in essence, a family? Are abandoned dogs proof of the existence or nonexistence of God? Ulises unknowingly embodies these questions, as a pilgrim of affection in a post-love era.
