Synopsis

At the end of her first week on the job, rookie deputy Kelly Mackinaw finds herself trapped on Lost Lake with three unidentified bodies, twelve potential killers and one vengeful ghost.

Wanakena County, NY. June 1973.

On a remote lake deep in the Adirondacks, Kelly, a tough, practical country girl and Mitch Herkemer, a Vietnam vet with extensive knowledge of illegal substances and a shaky understanding of Eastern religions, rush to solve a gruesome mystery before a simmering feud between a group of rich swingers and a family of local squatters erupts into a full-scale shooting war.

As the first female deputy in Wanakena County, Kelly can see with an outsider’s eye. As a witness to the mysteries of Lost Lake in his youth, Mitch has troubled insights of his own. Kelly sees corruption and lies everywhere, while Mitch sees tangled auras and conflicting moral responsibilities. Both soon realize that the source of the conflict lies in the brooding village of Shallow Rock, where a sinister cabin squats in the stinking muck of Shakers Bog.

"The Adventure of Wisteria Lodge" is one of the fifty-six Sherlock Holmes short stories written by Arthur Conan Doyle. One of eight stories in the volume His Last Bow, it is a lengthy, two-part story consisting of "The Singular Experience of Mr. John Scott Eccles" and "The Tiger of San Pedro", which on original publication in The Strand bore the collective title of "A Reminiscence of Mr. Sherlock Holmes".
Holmes is visited by a perturbed proper English gentleman, John Scott Eccles, who wishes to discuss something "grotesque". No sooner has he arrived at 221B Baker Street than Inspector Gregson also shows up, along with Inspector Baynes of the Surrey Constabulary. They wish a statement from Eccles about the murder near Esher last night. A note in the dead man's pocket indicates that Eccles said that he would be at the victim's house that night.

Robert Benchley, 1889-1945, was a writer, humorist and actor of note during the 1920s through the early 1940s. Born in Massachusetts, he spent his early literary career in New York City as an editor, critic and columnist for many of the major magazines of the day.
Along with George Kaufman, Dorothy Parker and Harpo Marx, he was an original "member" of the Algonquin Round Table. His popularity led him to a side career in radio and film, which took him to California in his later years. Writers as diverse as James Thurber, Woody Allen and Dave Barry have credited Benchley as an influence.
Love Conquers All, originally published in 1922 is the second collection (of fifteen) gathering together Benchley's humorous essays and reviews. Some references are dated, of course, but the surreal and mundane targets of Benchley's wit will be familiar to everyone. This volume collects 63 excellent gems from his early professional work, when Benchley's enthusiasm and style were approaching their peak.(Summary by Ted Delorme)
