Synopsis

Rebecca is a troubled teenager, not comfortable in the shoes of a good girl, she rebels to cover up her malaise. Alessia looks to the tarot cards “for something that would help her solve her enigma”, fill the void she has within. Anxiety torments Luigi, an apparently confident man, who is in fact rather lonely, and who finds comfort and relief in surrounding himself with thousands of books. In Jana’s eyes you can read her atavistic fear. They recount the intricate complexity of adapting to the social conventions typical of a small provincial town, on the borders of Italy. The delicate portrait of the elderly protagonist in “Alzheimer’s”, the drawer-full of memories in “Trieste” and the young broken life of Goran, all paint a portrait for the fragility of human relationships seeking, in love, the strength to fight illness and death. Will the reader, along this bumpy path, at times tortuous, at times easy, other times harsh, a metaphor for life itself, be able to find the deeper meaning, the common thread?

Another case for Reginald Brett, barrister and hobby detective: David Hume-Frazer is in some trouble. He was the prime suspect in the murder case of his cousin, Alan. Though he was never convicted, suspicion clings to him, and he wishes his name to be cleared before he marries his fiancé, Helen Layton. The case is baffling: Alan was murdered with a Japanese knife on his own grounds, in front of the library windows -- in the same place, where four of his ancestors already died "in their boots"...

Time is the tonic. So why wait?
    Time travel doesn't exist.
Sure, it would be great if it did. It would be great if the hype wasn't all bluster.
With huge funding behind them, ChronoTonic claims to have achieved the impossible. The corporation is pushing its new machine — a time machine — as the solution to Earth's problems.
    I'm just not buying it.
They want to buzz forward in time, pick up a few technological advancements, and buzz back to apply them in the here and now. They say we can save lives and reduce suffering by learning the lessons of the future — today.
The same corporate overlords that got us into these problems are apparently going to get us out of them. Yeah... I'll believe that when I see it.
I think it's all empty hype.
And if it's not, I sure as hell don't trust ChronoTonic to use this technology as altruistically as they claim.
After years of hype, today is the day when they will finally reveal the machine.
I have media clearance to be in the audience, but I have bigger plans than that.
Once I get inside ChronoTonic HQ, I'm not sitting in the crowd.
No. That's not what investigative journalists do.
I'm stepping in with one goal in mind:
Wherever or whenever the truth is hiding... I'm going to find it.

Jack London, born John Griffith Chaney on January 12, 1876, in San Francisco, California, was an American novelist, journalist, and social activist. He is best known for his adventure novels "The Call of the Wild" and "White Fang," both of which explore the themes of survival and the law of the jungle in the harsh environment of the Klondike Gold Rush. London's life was as adventurous as his stories. He traveled extensively, lived in Hawaii, and engaged in numerous physical pursuits, which ultimately led to his health decline. He died on November 22, 1916, at his ranch in Glen Ellen, California, from kidney failure at the age of 40. Despite his short life, London's impact on literature, especially in portraying the natural world and human nature, remains significant. His works have been translated into many languages and continue to be popular for their vivid storytelling and exploration of human spirit and endurance.
