Synopsis

Waif-like and half-starved the beautiful eighteen-year-old Tara has no second name and no family. Orphaned when her mother died tragically in a carriage crash, she was raised in the appalling ‘Orphanage of the Nameless’ in London and has no knowledge at all of the world outside. The drunken Matron of the Orphanage, Mrs. Barrowfield, relies on Tara to control, feed and look after the many orphans while she spends most of the money intended for their food on drink. Then one day Mr. Falkirk comes to inform her that the Orphanage’s owner and patron, the Duke of Arkcraig, has ordered her to Scotland to work in Castle Arkcraig.Arriving, timid and overawed to meet her new Master, she is appalled to find that she has been seriously misled. She is there not to work as a servant but to become the imperiously handsome Duke’s bride – willing or not!All of a sudden she is embroiled in the terrible enmity between the McCraig Clan and the equally warlike Kildonnons and the curse that hangs over them like a black cloud. Worst of all, she finds that she has lost her heart to the husband for whom she had never asked and yet who now seems to be cold and aloof. Has she been rescued from poverty and the horrors of the Orphanage and brought to the Duke’s majestic Castle only to spend a lifetime starved of love

“The greatest writer to have appeared in Latin America since the so-called ‘boom’ . . . I’m tempted to call Bolaño the love child of David Lynch and Jorge Luis Borges—he’s that visceral and erudite—but this wouldn’t do justice to his ambition.” —John Powers, NPR’s Fresh AirIn 1938 Paris, Monsieur Pierre Pain, a beleaguered mesmerist and a lonely bachelor, receives a telegram from his friend and unrequited love, Madame Reynaud: an acquaintance of hers lies in a hospital bed beset with a mysterious, and apparently terminal, case of the hiccups. She entreats Pain to use his peculiar skill set to cure him, and buoyed by her confidence, he agrees. But nothing about this case turns out to be ordinary, and soon Pain finds himself entangled in a dark and indecipherable sequence of events that sends him racing through the umbrous streets of Paris, lost and delirious. He attempts to visit the patient—none other than the exiled Peruvian poet César Vallejo—only to be barred from his bedside. He is stalked by a ghostly pair of men who emerge from the shadows to bribe him not to treat the poet. He encounters a former peer, now working across the border in war-torn Spain, whose career has taken a shockingly sinister turn, one which may explain this entire nightmare—or prove just another coincidence. A hypnotic and surreal noir, Roberto Bolaño’s Monsieur Pain takes us on a labyrinthine journey through conspiracy, occultism, and the unfathomable evil looming in our midst.A Macmillan Audio production from Farrar, Straus and Giroux.

Back in his hometown of Sugar House, running his family's board game shop and café, Ben Rosencrantz just can't seem to get his life to pass go, much less collect $200. Once he was a happily married English professor in Seattle. Now he's a divorced caregiver, looking after his ill father and a Chihuahua named Beans while still figuring out the rules of retail management. At least the town has become more LGBTQ+ friendly than when Ben was a teenager—and that flower shop owner, Ezra McCaslin, enjoys flirting with him.

But despite his usual clientele of gamers, Ben is barely earning enough to keep the store running and stay on top of his father's medical bills. Then a local toy and game collector named Clive offers him a winning strategy—to purchase a turn-of-the-twentieth-century edition of The Landlord's Game, the realty and taxation game that inspired Monopoly, at a tenth of the rare edition's true value. Suspicious of Clive's shady, low-priced deal, Ben turns the offer down.

Then Clive turns up dead at the front door of Ben's shop and a backpack full of $100 bills appears on his doorstep. Now Ben is the #1 suspect in Clive's death, and unless he and Ezra can prove his innocence and find the real killer, he'll go to jail for murder—and no amount of double dice rolls will set him free . . .
