Ashamed of their meagre lifestyle, she demands that her siblings pose as cook and butler in return for three hundred pounds, while she entertains the Duke in style in her ancestral home.

But, after the superb dinner is over, the Duke wanders into the kitchen unexpectedly and, instantly transfixed by the beauty, grace and charm of Nerissa, insists that the whole family joins his house party at his magnificent stately house, Lyn, which is not too far away.

There Nerissa discovers the secret curse of the Lynchester Dukes that they will never be happy once they inherit the title and then, through her special perspicacity and a vivid dream, when she talks to the ghost of a long dead Duchess, she puts the curse to rest.

The Duke’s heart is now set forever on Nerissa and he risks life itself and their future happiness in a cunning but perilous gamble when both of their hearts are at stake.

"I believe in the spirit of the age; it is a spirit of progress, though its path is often through blood."

Set in Yorkshire during the turbulent years of 1811–1812, Shirley is Charlotte Brontë's most ambitious social novel. Against a backdrop of the Luddite riots and the economic strangulation of the Napoleonic Wars, the story weaves together the lives of two very different women: the shy, repressed Caroline Helstone and the vibrant, independent heiress Shirley Keeldar.

The Clash of Progress and Tradition: At the heart of the crisis is Robert Moore, a mill owner whose determination to modernize his factory puts him at odds with his starving workers. As tensions escalate into violent attacks on the mill, the characters are forced to navigate a world of shifting loyalties, class warfare, and the harsh realities of the Industrial Revolution.

A Masterpiece of Shared Experience: While Jane Eyre focused on the individual, Shirley explores the power of community and the "Woman Question." Brontë masterfully portrays the bond between Shirley and Caroline as they challenge the restrictive roles imposed upon them by society. It is a novel of intellectual depth and political passion, blending gritty historical realism with a poignant search for personal fulfillment.

Witness the birth of the modern world through the eyes of two unforgettable women. Purchase "Shirley" today and experience Brontë's most expansive historical drama.

    Title: The Yellow Wallpaper
    Author: Charlotte Perkins Gilman
    Narrator: Jonathan Dunne
    Original Publication: 1892
    Public Domain: Yes
Series Placement: Number 4 in the Timeless Terrors series
    Description:
The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman is a groundbreaking work of psychological horror and early feminist literature. First published in 1892 in The New England Magazine, it tells the story of a woman suffering from postpartum depression who is confined to a room by her physician husband under the guise of a “rest cure.”
As she becomes increasingly obsessed with the room’s grotesque yellow wallpaper, her mind unravels in a chilling descent into madness. Gilman’s story is both a critique of the oppressive medical and social attitudes of her time and a powerful exploration of mental health, autonomy, and the dangers of silencing women.
This recording, narrated by Amazon bestselling horror author Jonathan Dunne, captures the story’s creeping dread and psychological intensity. While the text is in the public domain, this performance is an original work and copyright © 2025 Jonathan Dunne.
Listeners should expect an unsettling, claustrophobic tale that remains one of the most influential and enduring pieces of American gothic literature.
